ARM unveils first cores featuring DynamIQ technology

Cortex A75

ARM owns the mobile market. As new software and hardware come along every year, the CPU and GPU design need to be upgraded as well and fulfil the latest requirements of modern devices.

At the architectural level then, Mali-G72 doesn't make any radical alterations to the Bifrost architecture. Smartphones are pushing in new directions such as VR and console-quality gaming. What's significant about this year's lineup, though, is that they are purpose-built for mobile AI and machine learning tasks, as well as suited for augmented reality and mixed reality applications. These applications are in turn placing steep demands on data centers, forcing companies to be more innovative with servers and networking infrastructure. For example, a chipset that calls on the company's new designs could have three A75 cores and five A55 cores, or one A75 and seven A55s - all depending on the intended desires for power efficiency, performance and price point. It has brought along notable improvements in processing power as the chipmaker boasts of a 20 percent boost in performance at the expense of the same power consumption as existing mobile processors. The core also offers 16% more memory throughput, as well as a 30% increase in performance on large-screen devices. This helps to provide better performance in a smaller area and on a budget.

While the Cortex-A75 is more about performance than efficiency, the Cortex-A55 delivers up to 18 percent more performance at 15 percent better power efficiency compared to the Cortex-A53. "It's a substantial uplift in performance", he added. Alongside those first DynamIQ microarchitecture processors ARM launched another important design today at Computex, the Mali-G72 GPU.

ARM has developed a new generation of mobile chips that will empower the smartphones and tablets of tomorrow with machine learning and artificial intelligence capabilities.

DynamIQ allows a more mix-and-match approach, with heterogeneous core types in the same cluster, that can be configured or optimized differently.

Earlier today we reported on the launch of the ARM Cortex-A75 and Cortex-A55 processors which push the boundaries of mobile computing performance. ARM also say that the device is suitable for use in self-driving vehicles. To further optimise SoCs for distributed intelligence and device-based Machine Learning (ML), ARM is also launching the latest premium version of the world's No. 1 shipping GPU, the Mali-G72. That architecture is based on the assumption that the highest CPU performance is required only about 10 percent of the time. This design makes it possible to spec a single, mixed-up cluster composed of both big and little CPUs, to a maximum of eight. Excising instructions one big way to save on die space, allowing ARM to throw out the transistors that would be needed to execute those instructions.
