"The operating systems on our computers and software downloads are managed centrally so that regular users can not download executable files from the internet without administrative rights", he said in an email.

Security researchers are still scrambling to learn more about how the malware operates, but it's understood that WannaCry exploits a vulnerability in older, outdated Windows systems including Windows XP, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2003.

Till now, more than 150 countries have been affected by WannaCry ransomware, which exploits EternalBlue vulnerability and uses phishing emails.

In a frustrated blog post, Mr Smith outlines how government agencies that find vulnerabilities in software used by the masses often fail to notify the host company and instead exploit those vulnerabilities themselves to hack and monitor their citizens and those of other countries.

And WannaCry threatens to create even more havoc on Monday when people return to work.

There are several factors in play.

The spread of the virus slowed over the weekend but the respite might only be brief, experts have warned.

EU's law enforcement agency Europol director Rob Wainwright.

In the meantime, South Korea's major theater chain CJ CGV said around 50 of its complexes are estimated to have been attacked by the malware.

At least one strain of the ransomware has proven especially vicious. One did not include the so-called kill switch that allowed researchers to interrupt the malware's spread Friday by diverting it to a dead end on the internet.

Hunt noted that one way out of the issue is to rebuild the machines that are infected.

In a statement dated Sunday, Qihoo 360 said the ransomware had spread particularly quickly through higher education, affecting more than 4,000 Chinese universities and research institutions. All sectors of the economy were vulnerable and organizations could take lessons from the banking industry, which appeared to have largely escaped the global attack. Japanese broadcaster NTV reported 600 companies in that country had been hit, and automaker Nissan and the Hitachi conglomerate said they were addressing the problem at their units that were affected.

Many firms have had experts working over the weekend to prevent new infections. The perpetrators have earned US$26,148, according to security firm Redsocks.

"We've seen no impact in the health system which is important, we've had no reports of any government agencies impacted by this... unfortunately there are some very smart and bad people out there who spend their times trying to make things worse for us, and this is not game over".

Other victims were most likely small and medium-sized businesses. Well, you can still download the update and follow some basic safety measures to keep yourself away from such attacks. After taking over a computer, WannaCry locks down the machine and asks for about $300 as a ransom.

At the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, 20 workstations assigned for normal office work and running on Windows 7 and XP operating systems were infected by the virus and were immediately isolated from the network. Deutsche Bahn said it deployed extra staff to busy stations to provide customer information, and recommended that passengers check its website or app for information on their connections.

Apple's Mac computers were not targeted by this ransomware attack so are clear.

Megafon: A spokesperson for Russian telecommunications company Megafon told CNN that the cyberattack affected call centers but not the company's networks.

Other victims include is a Nissan manufacturing plant in Sunderland, northeast England, hundreds of hospitals and clinics in the British National Health Service, German rail operator Deutsche Bahn and global shipper FedEx Corp.
