The White House has said Comey's firing was unrelated to the Russian Federation probe. The president said Comey's successor might be named as soon as Friday.

Enter Comey. We have enough supporting information to know exactly why he was axed even if we don't know all of what he knew.

The White House initially said the investigation was not a factor in Trump's decision.

In an initial statement made the same day of Comey's firing last Tuesday, Warner had said, "Now more than ever, it is vital that our ongoing investigation is completed in a credible and bipartisan way".

"I was going to fire regardless of recommendation", Trump claimed.

Sessions forwarded Rosenstein's memo to Trump and recommended that he remove Comey from his role.

Montana Republican Party Chairman Jeff Essmann said Republicans better strap in and be prepared to work hard to save their seats.

A White House official has said Trump is considering 11 people to replace Comey.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer told reporters the president would fill the job "as soon as he finds a candidate that fits the qualities that he feels are necessary".

"That's, frankly, offensive", Spicer said. "All previously scheduled", White House communications director Mike Dubke told CNN.

WikiLeaks is offering $100,000 for the alleged "Comey tapes" - the recordings that Donald Trump has hinted he might have of his January dinner with now-fired FBI Director James Comey.

Lawmakers from both parties reprimanded Trump's actions, which included shifting explanations from the White House for Comey's dismissal and an ominous tweet by Trump that warned Comey against leaks to the press because he may have "tapes" of their conversations.

"No. ... The final decision to move forward with it was yesterday".

He added, "There's really no right time to do it, but I mean, I'm OK with it".

As the media - the fake one - went to town about Trump's "threat" to the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation chief and the "inappropriateness" of his demand for loyalty, he told his current favourite conservative Fox News that he never popped such a question. Comey would not be commenting on specifics of the investigation into Russian interference in the presidential election - but would likely discuss issues of his record.

After watching Director Comey's testimony last Wednesday [May 3, 2017], the President was strongly inclined to remove him.

Trump also hit back on Friday at media reports questioning the credibility of White House accounts of why Comey was sacked, which have changed over the course of the week, and threatened an end to regular White House press briefings. "And then all of a sudden, they come out with these glowing reports".

Trump said Fred had a "profound impact" on his own life, and said he is looking down from heaven telling his younger brother to keep pressing along. "He can hire and fire whoever he wants", she said.

But the Kushner theory aside, what is perhaps most interesting about the decision to go nuclear this week on Comey was the pre-announcement calm inside the White House.

Trump told Fox News in an interview he did not think an independent probe was necessary.

Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker and an ally of Mr Trump's said the president "resembles a quarterback who doesn't call a huddle and gets ahead of his offensive line so nobody can block him and defend him because nobody knows what the play is".
