"We think it's going to be the footprint for other kinds of attacks in the future".

This makes it all the more important that computers and networks quickly install the Windows patches that fix the problem that allowed the code to so easily spread in the first place.

Hospitals in the United Kingdom and telecommunications companies in Spain are among those hit by a "ransomware" attack that locked up computer data and demanded payment to free it.

WannaCry is not just a ransomware program, it's also a worm. "Whilst this researcher has slowed the spread of the malware by registering that domain, new variants are popping up, new versions will continue to spread online and it will continue to be an issue", he says.

Europol described it as "unprecedented".

Security experts say no one is immune to a ransomware attack, but the people who should be most concerned is anyone who hasn't updated Windows. Deutsche Bahn, Germany's national railway service, tweeted that its train service had not been compromised and that it was working to solve the problems.

Russia's cybersecurity monitoring center, FinCert, operated by the country's central bank, also announced that the attack had not penetrated its systems.

The foreign ministry did not confirm whether it was the institution in question. "We are implementing remediation steps as quickly as possible", a FedEx statement said.

He said people should be regularly updating their software, and not just when there is a threat.

A spokesman for the Russian Health Ministry, Nikita Odintsov, said on Twitter that the cyberattacks on his ministry were "effectively repelled".

"This is not targeted at the NHS, it's an global attack and a number of countries and organisations have been affected". But it appears to be "low-level" stuff, Eisen said Saturday, given the amount of ransom demanded - $300 at first, rising to $600 before it destroys files hours later. Universities in Greece and Italy also were hit. The committee, the nation's top investigative agency, has rejected the claim.

The hackers are demanding money in the form of the digital currency Bitcoin to unfreeze the infected computers.

Patients of the state-funded country-wide service are facing days of chaos as appointments and surgeries were cancelled after almost 45 NHS organisations from London to Scotland were hit in the "ransomware" attack on Friday.

Hundreds of thousands of computers around the world have been infected with a malicious software called WannaCry that encrypts files.

Security officials in Britain urged organizations to protect themselves by installing the security fixes, running antivirus software and backing up data elsewhere.

"We are aware of widespread speculation about the use of Microsoft Windows XP by NHS organisations, who commission IT systems locally depending on population need".

"Healthcare records holding sensitive and personal data are 100 times more valuable than stolen credit card details, so it comes as no surprise to see that NHS England has been targeted in this way".

According to cyber analysis, the Wanna Decryptor malware used in the attack on the NHS and Telefonica "exploits a similar vulnerability" to an NSA-developed tool known as EXTERNALBLUE, researcher Marco Cova said.

A Massive RansomWare attack (largest in history) hit over 200,000 computers across the world (India hit massively as well).

Bart's Health, which runs several London hospitals, said it had activated its major incident plan, cancelling routine appointments and diverting ambulances to neighboring hospitals.

"This event should serve as a global wake-up call the means of delivery and the delivered effect is unprecedented", Rich Barger, the director of threat research at security firm Splunk, said in a separate statement. Patients were asked not to come to hospitals unless it was an emergency.
