North Korea rolls out missiles at parade to celebrate founder's birthday

North Korea threatens to 'ravage' U.S. if Trump orders airstrike

North Korea has made no secret of its desire to boost its military power, while a US naval strike group is approaching close to waters off the Korean Peninsula in a show of force, following high-profile USA military attacks this month on Syria and the Islamic State in a remote part of Afghanistan.

The hardware displayed Saturday included what appeared to be a new ICBM and a submarine-launched ballistic missile, which Pyongyang successfully test-fired last August, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said.

North Korea on Friday denounced the United States for bringing "huge nuclear strategic assets" to the region as the USS Carl Vinson strike group with a flag-ship nuclear-powered aircraft carrier steamed closer.

The country's number two official on Saturday said North Korea was prepared to respond to any nuclear attack by the United States in kind.

On display for the first time were what appeared to be the Pukkuksong submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), which have a range of more than 1,000 km.

Saturday's parade was staged amid soaring tensions with the United States, which has not ruled out military action to prevent North Korea from progressing in its nuclear weapons programs.

North Korea on Saturday warned the USA not to take provocative action in the region, saying it is "ready to hit back with nuclear attacks". That threat, however, has been made numerous times in the past.

Pictures on state television showed thousands of soldiers marching in formation alongside tanks, balloons and enormous crowds.

Responding, Trump stated that North Korea is "looking for trouble" and that he would "solve the problem".

A surprise at the parade was the appearance of Kim Won-hong, who was among the senior government officials joining Mr Kim at the podium.

US President Donald Trump held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping at his Mar-a-Lago resort last Friday to push his case for China to do more to rein in North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

However, U.S. officials told The Associated Press on Friday that the Trump administration has settled on a policy that will emphasize on increasing pressure on Pyongyang with the help of China, North Korea's only major ally, instead of military options or trying to overthrow Kim's leadership.

Recently the USA began installing a missile defense system in South Korea that has produced protests from China, which sees North Korea as a useful buffer between it and US ally South Korea.

"However, North Korea has a habit of showing off new concepts in parades before they ever test or launch them", Hanham said. He is the grandfather of current leader Kim Jong-Un, who was on hand to witness the spectacle.

The United States was reportedly ready to strike North Korea if US officials became convinced the country would carry out its test, and the Trump administration said its "strategic patience" with the country has run out.
