Ransomware Attack Hits Businesses Across The World

TUV Rheinland – Security Advisory – WannaCrypt

As of 9am AEST today at least a dozen Australian small businesses are believed to have been hit by WannaCry/WannaCrypt ransomware, according to the government.

"We're in the face of an escalating threat, the numbers are going up", he said, and added that the current attack was unprecedented.

"Cyber security is not a luxury, it's absolutely essential and critical".

Shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth accused the Government of ignoring "extensive warning signs" about vulnerabilities in NHS computer systems. "We don't know when the problem can be solved", said the spokesman, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Security solutions providers have also accelerated efforts to develop tools to tide over the crisis.

"I think $20,000 to $30,000 worth", said Rob Wainwright, the director of Europol.

"This attack provides yet another example of why the stockpiling of vulnerabilities by governments is such a problem", Microsoft President and Chief Legal Officer Brad Smith said in a blog post on Sunday, comparing the recent leaks of NSA and Central Intelligence Agency hacking tools to, in the real world, the theft of cruise missiles. This attack demonstrates the degree to which cyber security has become a shared responsibility between tech companies and customers.

"We have recently invested in upgrading IT to protect potentially vulnerable NHS Wales systems and all GP systems in Wales are managed and supported centrally, with best practice security controls". Finally, if you do not have one already, this would be a good time to develop a cybersecurity incident response plan.

WannaCry brought to the front numerous issues we, security professionals have been highlighting for considerable time.

Officials say they're aware of those problems. We are quite anxious about the recent attacks.

By late yesterday, around 80 per cent of its network was back online, PetroChina said. Korea Internet and Security Agency reports that those include several local firms as well.

Just this Friday, the NHS experienced what is now being called a "ransomware attack", with the cyber security breach causing 16 out of 47 trusts to face issues.

The United States was the biggest - and softest - target.

Never pay a ransom. And the average ransom spiked 266%, with criminals demanding an average of $1,077 per victim.

They were among many victims of an indiscriminate global attack that has struck hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide by exploiting known vulnerabilities in older Microsoft computer operating systems.

In a statement, the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Natuual Resources said the HSE had been working over the weekend in order to prevent any of the 49,000 machines on its networks from being compromised.
