A successful cyber-attack on the banking system, the electric grid, traffic lights or electronic medical records could do far more economic and security damage.

The RBI has asked banks to follow the instructions of the government organisation CERT-In on ransomware which has impacted various IT networks in over 150 countries.

At least 30 computers have been reportedly affected by ransomware in Bangladesh.

The attack is the kind of global ransomware-based event that is the stuff of cybersecurity experts' nightmares.

Ransomware is nothing new.

This unfortunate episode serves as yet another reminder that cybersecurity needs to be at the forefront of future developments, particularly as society becomes increasingly reliant on technology to do tasks that have greater importance.

The tools behind the attack originated within the NSA.

Sergey Golovanov, principal security researcher at Russia's Kaspersky Lab, said "a couple" of Russian banks had encountered the WannaCry malware. Although ransomware has been increasingly prevalent over the last few years, this particular version, called "WannaCry", spread quickly and widely around the world. The vulnerability allows cybercriminals to install and execute malicious code on infected gadgets. The college is now searching the rest of its network in case other computers were affected, he said.

The malicious software hit tens of thousands of systems in hospitals, schools, auto factories, shops and more, locking computers worldwide with an unprecedented global reach.

The breach was first reported at Britain's National Health Service.

Not being able to access patient records was a huge problem for United Kingdom hospitals was a huge problem over the weekend, but the scenarios could be much worse in the future, when robotics could be used to perform increasingly important tasks. NHS has mostly recovered - by Monday, only two hospitals were still closed to new patients.

But Milford, like MalwareTech, warned that the attack could resurface, like a virus that mutates to resist a treatment. He promptly registered the domain, something he regularly does to discover ways to track or stop cyber threats, and found that stopped the worm from spreading. In March, thousands of leaked Central Intelligence Agency documents exposed vulnerabilities in smartphones, televisions and software built by Apple Inc., Google and Samsung Electronics Co.

The WannaCry ransomware program takes advantage of flaws in unpatched copies of some versions of Windows, especially Windows XP. Even though Microsoft no longer provides updates for Windows XP, it is still widely used in Europe and Asia.

"Our key direction to you is to remember that we are in this with our customers - we are trusted advisers, counselors, and suppliers to them", he wrote.

You convert your dollars to bitcoins, - the crooks are happy to explain how to do that and how to pay them, - and then maybe, if there is really honor among thieves, you might just get your files back.

Nemeroff cited how 85 percent of companies haven't yet upgraded to the latest Windows 10 operating system, according to Credit Suisse's corporate survey.

Dore said companies that faced disruptions because they did not run the Microsoft update or because they were using older versions of Windows could face lawsuits if they publicly touted their cyber security.

Always practice net safety. Several security holes are fixed before they can be exploited. If you do not keep secure backups of your critical systems and data, you should begin doing so immediately.

Beginning on Friday, May 12, 2017, organizations across the world were hit by a cyberattack called WannaCry.
