Terry Finley enters Preakness confident in Always Dreaming

The Preakness field will include four of Always Dreaming's rivals from the 20-horse Kentucky Derby field, Classic Empire, runner-up Lookin At Lee, seventh-place Gunnevera and 11th-place Hence. After Wednesday afternoon's draw for post positions, the Kentucky Derby victor remains a strong favorite among the 10 contenders. They had to go all the way back to the drawing board, take him back to a quiet spot in Ocala [Fla.] and start training him up for his final Kentucky Derby prep race.

Anthony Bonomo, who grew up in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, N.Y., and his wife, MaryEllen, got involved in thoroughbred racing as owners in 2006, when they purchased two horses that raced under the banner of Brooklyn Boyz Stable. He did race his first six career races with them and those were some of his best efforts, so I'm not surprised to see connections return to what worked. That horse didn't race as a 2-year-old, one of three who didn't in this year's field. "I'd like to take the draw reins off him and let him stretch his neck a little bit".

Pletcher trains him, and on paper it's hard to make a case against Derby victor Always Dreaming, the 4-5 morning-line favorite who may go off at an even shorter price.

"It's never that easy", he said. He has only run one poor race since graduating and is coming off his best win when he took the Lexington Stakes by a head. Entries were due Wednesday, when post positions were drawn.

For one thing, it won't be as crowded in the starting gate. Of Pletcher's eight Preakness starters to date, none has done better.

"They're all solid horses in there", Finley said.

"If we can't win, I hope he does".

Always Dreaming is unquestionably the most likely victor of Saturday's Preakness at Pimlico. To exit with any money using the heavy favorite, though, you'll need to bet the triple. "I thought he ran a very good second, so that makes him certainly a horse you have to keep your eye on for this race". I can say we love having him around and we know that racing needs stars.

He had enough points to qualify for the Kentucky Derby, but McKenna chose to wait for the Preakness.

"I just want the race to get here", he said.

I hated Super Saver that day because I thought he was fortunate to get a sloppy track in the Derby and another incredible rail ride from Calvin Borel. This whole two weeks in between the Derby and the Preakness is all about just refueling and keeping him healthy and happy.

But longshots have had a good chance of finishing second. He's the second morning-line favorite at 3-1 with a great shot of ending up in the winner's circle. He may work out the ideal stalking trip and save ground racing behind front runners Conquest Mo Money and Always Dreaming. Always Dreaming will have no limitations with its speed on a faster, shorter track.

The dark colt, ridden by John Velazquez, won the Derby by 2 3/4 lengths two weeks ago at Churchill Downs over Lookin At Lee, who starts second from the outside on Saturday and ranks third with Preakness oddsmakers at 10-1. "If he thinks he's running, he'll sit back".

Which Preakness post positions are the most advantageous?
