Another leadership test for Pelosi, who's weathered many

Pelosi also incorrectly predicted that Democrats were poised to take back the House past year, leading some of her colleagues to feel that this time around, she needs to deliver. Nor have they identified a challenger.

The frustrated Democrats met in Rice's office a day earlier to discuss their options as they face long odds of knocking out the woman who has led the Democratic caucus for almost 15 years from minority to majority and back, raised tens of millions of dollars and has had multiple legislative successes. Most notable was the appearance of Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond, the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. On Thursday, the National Republican Senatorial Committee sent out a press release attacking Nevada Democratic Rep. Jacky Rosen over her ties to Pelosi. He emphasized that the group "was a diverse group from an ideological, geographic and ethnic standpoint".

The party's latest setback has only heightened its internal tensions, with some calling for the ouster of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Indeed, it was nearly as if both candidates tried to deny that Mr. Trump existed - Mr. Ossoff because he needed GOP crossover votes to win, and Ms. Handel, because she wanted to shore up support from centrists. Ms. Handel beat Mr. Ossoff by walking a tightrope, attracting independents and moderates while not chasing away the pro-Trump voters.

It's understandable: Republican ads in Georgia painted the Democrat, Jon Ossoff, as sure to be a Pelosi pawn - a charge that has scored for the GOP in race after race over the last decade. That's the trap for Democrats right now as they watch Trump struggle in office.

He said the Democratic Party, however, isn't self-aware enough to realize that they'll always have an uphill battle if she's the face of the party. As was likely the case with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, this gendered frustration adds a whole other dimension to their hatred of these female members of the liberal elite.

"I'm worth the trouble, quite frankly", snapped back Pelosi to her critics.

"When it comes to personal ambition and having fun on TV, have your fun", Pelosi said. "I love the fray".

"The Democrats actually are competitive when they talk about Medicare, college tuition, wages", Watters said.

"One of the disappointing things from the last couple days is that that approach has a little bit of punch to it, it still moves voters", Ryan said.

But Pelosi's camp signaled she is taking the grumbling seriously. "Well, I'm a master legislator".

It's come to this: For leadership that doesn't repel a majority of Americans, Democrats need to recruit someone who doesn't represent the truth about their party.

And for some, they point to questions about how their leaders, and Pelosi in particular, have fallen short in crafting an economic message that can counter Trump and yield election victories. We'll be playing in all of them.

Pelosi's comments came directly following a secret afternoon meeting of a dozen Democratic lawmakers, discussing how they could potentially replace Pelosi as the party's leader in the House ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

President Donald Trump weighed in Thursday, tweeting, "I certainly hope the Democrats do not force Nancy P out".

And Pelosi's fundraising prowess? "So, we are paving a way for a new generation of leadership".

Rep. Rice disagreed, saying, "There is a consensus, I think, that we can reach in the caucus that allows for a new leadership team to be put in place in a time that's well before, hopefully, November of next year". She said, "They say they want young people to get involved".

"We don't agonize, we organize", she concluded.
