Atlanta mayoral candidates speak out on Paris accord withdrawal

President Donald Trump wants to stop contributing to the United Nations -managed Green Climate Fund, claiming that "nobody else is even close" to the $1 billion the USA has paid so far.

A different route would be for America to withdraw from the 1992 UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, under whose auspices the pact was negotiated.

In their statement, France, Germany and Italy warned Mr Trump that the Paris agreement could not be renegotiated.

"President Trump's courageous decision to exit the Paris Accord recognizes that the United States is not legally bound to an Obama-era agreement that set unrealistic emissions targets at the expense of billions of American taxpayer dollars without the approval of Congress", said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who joined nine other states in urging Trump to leave the agreement.

Both China and the European Union are sending the world a clear signal that there can be "no backsliding" on the Paris climate pact, Juncker said Friday as he opened trade and climate talks with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Brussels.

"We believe that the positive trends in the decline of prices of renewable energy and energy efficiency will continue to drive global action to ensure that global temperature rise remains well below 2 °C", he said.

In what could herald a tilt away from trans-Atlantic ties, European and Chinese officials joined to affirm their commitment to the Paris agreement, widely considered a landmark deal for bringing together nearly all countries under a common goal.

Only Syria and Nicaragua did not sign up to the deal.

Two members of the Trump administration - Scott Pruitt, the E.P.A. administrator, and Sean Spicer, the press secretary - dodged when reporters asked them to state Donald Trump's position at the briefing Friday.

French President Emmanuel Macron called Trump's decision "a mistake" and said that we all share responsibility to "make our planet great again". According to Reuters, Macron noted the US president's willingness to discuss the matter and praised Trump as a "pragmatist".

"We provided our islands as a launching pad for them to achieve their objectives and now we are facing the biggest war of our time, they are abandoning us", he told the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation during a visit to the neighbouring island.

He said MA will continue its commitment to exceed the emission reduction targets of the Paris compact. "As someone who cares deeply about the environment, which I do, I can not in good conscience support a deal that punishes the United States - which is what it does - the world's leader in environmental protection, while imposing no meaningful obligations on the world's leading polluters".

"We must also aim to collaborate with other nations in drastically reducing greenhouse gas emissions", added Ms Jayapal.

Trump, she said, is "playing on a past generation and a lost industry, and we can't bring it back". "The task will get tougher, of course, but it will also demonstrate that the Paris Agreement was a collective endeavour, not merely contingent on US action or inaction".

Key points in the agreement include peaking greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible and achieving a balance between sources of energy in the second half of this century. He's said California's economy is proof that combating climate change isn't the economic deadweight Trump suggests.
