Britain: May to form government with DUP

Theresa May has come under fire for her snap election

The DUP, the largest party in the Northern Ireland assembly and which secured 10 parliamentary seats in the general election, was founded by Ian Paisley in 1971.

The arrangement being sought is known as "confidence and supply", under which the Tories could rely on DUP support in key votes like Budgets and no-confidence motions.

Downing Street said an outline agreement on a "confidence and supply" arrangement had been reached which will be put to the Cabinet for discussion on Monday.

Mrs. May is due to meet with the 1922 Committee on Tuesday evening after meeting with DUP leader Arlene Foster.

The DUP is an ultra-right wing outfit.

"I asked for a categoric assurance that if any deal or scoping deal was done with the DUP there would be absolutely no rescission of LGBTI rights in the rest of the United Kingdom, in Great Britain, and that we would use any influence that we had to advance LGBTI rights in Northern Ireland".

She has also said she can not work with or support the Labour Party's Jeremy Corbyn.

During the Northern Ireland peace process, the party withdrew from talks as a protest against Sinn Féin and the republican movement being involved in the peace process.

She added that Mrs May had agreed to use her influence to try and advance gay rights in Northern Ireland. This is impossible with one of those parties now set to prop up the Conservatives.

The focus for the pro-Brexit DUP, which returned 10 MPs to Westminster, will be the border.

However, the DUP said last night that talks were still continuing, and that the deal has not been finalized yet.

Sinn Fein increased its vote in the seats that were contested in Northern Ireland in the general election, taking seven. I wouldn't go that far at this stage, but I think life is going to become very hard for Theresa May and the euro skeptics who want Britain to pull out of the European Union.

Given May's diminished state, many in the European Union are wondering how long she will be leading the country and - by extension - the Brexit negotiations. And the problem is there's a majority in the House of Commons who don't really believe in Brexit, who think that Britain should adopt a much softer form of Brexit rather than the harder form of Brexit that Theresa May was advocating.

But she stressed she understood the "Brexit dilemma" will now dominate Parliament. Another leading Tory Brexiteer, Michael Gove, was recalled to the cabinet. But these aren't normal circumstances.

"Jeremy Corbyn gave us power, that's what he's all about".

Speaking after visiting Buckingham Palace on Friday, she said only her party had the "legitimacy" to govern, despite falling eight seats short of a majority, the BBC reported.

Prime Minister Theresa May leaves the prime minister's residence on Friday.

"We have a program, we have support and we are ready to fight another election campaign as soon as may be". "May has an obligation to do so-or else go".

The Liberal Democrats said May should be "ashamed" of carrying on.

Corbyn was among those who called for May to resign after the results were announced. He is already seeking an alliance with the party's Blairite right.

"I've never seen people more hateful in my life", he said.

A year ago I asked Arlene Foster about that prospect of citizens having to use a passport to travel within their own country and she ruled it out categorically as "a red line for us".

An alliance with the Blairites is Corbyn's political preparation for assuming responsibility for governing on behalf of British capitalism.

That point about the Queen's Speech is particularly poignant.

As the pre-election polls showed Labour's vote rising, the tabloid press warned a vote for Corbyn's Labour could result in an unstable, chaotic government with links to terrorism.
