Caroline Wozniacki crashes out of French Open

They will face either 16th-seeded Colombian duo Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah or Ryan Harrison of the United States and Michael Venus of New Zealand. Ostapenko reached her first Grand Slam semifinal in career and broke into the top 25, she will be No. It was only a temporary reprieve for the Russian, though, and Wozniacki reasserted her control, pummelling a two-fisted backhand down the line to win the match, before firing a ball into the upper tier of the stands. Scrapping back from love-30 down, Bacsinszky exploited a sloppy patch from her opponent, reeling off four points in a row to move to within one game of the semifinals.

The second resumed after a three hour rain break with the scores level at 1-1.

If she does make it there and win, she will be the first Frenchwoman to achieve the championship since Mary Pierce in 2000.

Ostapenko hit 38 winners to 50 unforced errors during her contest.

Perhaps the most naturally gifted shotmaker in the game, Ostapenko continued her attack and after a long third game, she found herself with a break point chance, but Wozniacki fought it off to hold.

Four years ago, after her time on tour was limited by foot and abdominal injuries, she took a hiatus from tennis to work at restaurants with an eye toward pursuing a degree in hotel management. Ostapenko came into this tournament with nearly zero grand slam success, but the 19-year-old has beaten three straight top-50 players and is fresh off a match in which she hit 46 winners. Ostapenko will turn 20 while Bacsinszky turns 28. "It was really tough to keep my concentration, but I'm really happy and proud".

"I had to stay aggressive. It probably helps me to win today". "It is my first semifinalist ever".

Rain and bad weather robbed Roland Garros of nearly an entire day's play with only Jelena Ostapenko and Timea Bacsinszky winning their singles matches.

Ostapenko converted her second match point with a forehand attack, her 50th victor of the match.

Caroline Wozniacki crashed out at the quarter-final stage of the French Open after a three-set defeat to Latvian teenager Jelena Ostapenko.

She was again unable to back it up and Bacsinszky took the next four games to stretch to what proved to be a crucial 5-3 lead.

Ostapenko won the first set 7-6 (4). Ostapenko dominated play in the final set after the second rain delay to improve to 4-0 all-time against Wozniacki.

Sometimes, nerves get the better of Timea Bacsinszky.

"She's feisty", Bacsinszky said.

She is the first unseeded woman to reach the French Open final for 34 years.

Ostapenko's next opponent is 30th-seeded Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland, who eliminated 13th-seeded Kristina Mladenovic of France 6-4, 6-4.

Because of rain on Tuesday, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic had to wait a day to try to set up a semifinal showdown, and their matches are scheduled to begin earlier Wednesday: at 11 a.m. local time (5 a.m. ET, 0900 GMT). Ostapenko has won 10 of her last 12 matches on clay court.

"Hopefully you've enjoyed that final, there were lots of efforts on both sides", Dabrowski said in an on-court interview. When the match ended, she smiled and shouted and pumped her fist.

Sunday's clash was their first on clay.

The 2016 singles champions Andy Murray and Angelique Kerber; doubles champions Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares, and Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic will also be honoured at the ITF World Champions Dinner in Paris. You could argue Ostapenko should be the favorite. No. 6 Dominic Thiem. No. 8 Kei Nishikori, and 2015 champion Stan Wawrinka vs.

The world number 47 said: "I didn't expect that it would be here in Paris, but I'm really happy it's here". When they battle Thursday, they'll both be celebrating a birthday.

One Frenchwoman however does remain in the draw: The player Mladenovic won the doubles title with past year in Paris, Caroline Garcia, who will play second-seed Karolina Pliskova in Wednesday's quarterfinals.
