Disarray as Democrats beaten in Georgia poll

Republicans have some breathing room after Karen Handel won a nationally watched congressional election in Georgia to avoid a major upset ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.

Mainstream publications published a variety of takes on the results, from frustrated calls for a change of Democratic strategy to generous interpretations that see the results as nothing short of promising. Despite the loss, we have a lot to be proud of.

In other words, after months of constant negative news about Trump and millions spent to turn this race into a referendum on his 5-month-old presidency, Handel's margin of victory was more than three times Trump's. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), the chair of the DCCC, wrote in the memo. The Republican running to replace budget director Mick Mulvaney in South Carolina's fifth congressional district underperformed, winning with a shade better than 51 percent of the vote. Democrats don't have to abandon the social and environmental issues they hold dear, but they need an economic message that appeals to a broader segment of the population. Sure, but it's always been less than likely because of how the districts are drawn.

As for a party torn apart by moderates and liberals, Rather said the one unifying force is that both want to get rid Donald Trump. He ran in a GOP-dominated district as a candidate willing to work with anyone - though he vowed he would "stand up" to Trump when necessary.

According to Politico, she pointed out that Ossoff lost by far less than other Democrats who had run in the district, which is progress for the party.

No, Democrats won't win districts like South Carolina Five and shouldn't waste money trying.

Her win marked an impressive rebound from polling that showed her narrowly trailing her rival as the vote approached, and signalled that Republican disillusionment about Mr. Trump was not as deep as Democrats were counting on.

But it seems that the Republican Party's election machinery - with or without Trump - is more solid than its critics think.

Secretary Handel has a long track record of seeking to impose her own views, and she took a job at a charity whose goal is fighting breast cancer, she abused her position to impose those views, defunded life-saving breast cancer screenings, resigned in disgrace, and cost the organization tens of millions of dollars or more in life-saving contributions. And at this rate, we could be in multiple military skirmishes all before a single 2018 ballot is cast. Jon Ossoff (right) is now a candidate for Georgia's 6th Congressional District Special Election.

"But Democrats can not let this defeat tamper our enthusiasm".

As the hype climaxed, even Trump chose to weigh in on behalf of the Republican candidate. But the fight for control in the nation's capita goes on.

Former Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-California), said Ossoff's loss was "tough", but Democrats, "can and will do better in 2018".

To the Democrats, it just didn't matter. He had enlisted few prominent Democrats to campaign on his behalf. He said it's clear that many Americans are unhappy with Trump's agenda but "don't yet have enough confidence in the Democratic alternative". Marginally, that might hurt the party's future chances. Political analysts agree that Ossoff's defeat Tuesday night doesn't necessarily spell doom-and-gloom for Democrats.

On Tuesday night, Bob Ott was on hand to accept credit for Handel's performance in Cobb. Democrats are now focused on gubernatorial elections this fall in Virginia and New Jersey, searching for their first win of the year. Rather, the loss in Georgia followed defeats in special elections in Kansas and Montana, and came on the same day as a loss in a congressional district in SC. After the most expensive congressional race in history, largely from the Democrats' cash infusions, Ossoff called for campaign finance reform.
