ICC Champions Trophy 2017: Kane Williamson's superb ton gives New Zealand edge

New Zealand v Australia Match Preview

New Zealand v Australia Match Preview

New Zealand and Australia's highly entertaining Champions Trophy clash at Edgbaston ended with both teams claiming a point each as the match was abandoned due to heavy rain. Rain is likely to affect many games in this short tournament of two and a half weeks and there are no reserve days in the group stages.

Earlier, Ronchi - born in New Zealand but raised in Australia, for whom he played seven limited-overs internationals in 2008-09 - provided some entertainment with three sixes and nine fours in a 43-ball salvo as a pinch-hitting opener.

New Zealand might be cursing the heavens as the stakes were loaded heavily in their favour when rain stopped the play for the third time in the match.

The match will be broadcast on PTV & Ten Sports in Pakistan, Channel 9, Fox Sports in Australia while SkySports and Sky Sports NZ in New Zealand.

England, who won their Group A opener against Bangladesh, will now face both sides in the coming days from a position of strength.

Ronchi was particularly severe on Patt Cummins (1/67) as he continued his onslaught and struck the pacer for a six and four in consecutive balls in the 13th over. Smith said at the toss that he was pleased his fast bowlers would have first use of the conditions, but they were not helped by an nearly total lack of swing.

Earlier, a century from captain Kane Williamson helped New Zealand to 291 before they were bowled out.

Martin Guptill (26) scored five boundaries in as many overs to take New Zealand to 38 for naught.

Hazlewood had career-best figures of 6-52 off nine overs, and the second best figures in trophy history.

Mitchell Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins are expected to fill in the last three spots with John Hastings and James Pattinson on the bench.

Williamson went on to make 100 off 97 balls, which included eight boundaries and three sixes, before he was run out by Moises Henriques.

The Australian opening stand, David Warner and Aaron Finch, were sent to pavilion by Trent Boult and Adam Milne respectively. His ability to seam the ball on English pitches is invaluable, and he couldn't bowl in the last warmup on Monday because of rain. That leaves Australia and New Zealand, with the loser of this match probably needing to find a way past England to qualify.

New Zealand come into the match and tournament as outsiders, but have plenty of cricket in the conditions under their belt, with a recent tri-series against Bangladesh and Ireland where they, as expected, were dominant but still dropped the final match against the Tigers.

With the game is concerned, New Zealand will expect swing bowlers Tim Southee and Trent Boult, and their joined performances can cause some damage.

Josh Hazlewood was the chief beneficiary as several batsmen carelessly holed out, with the fast bowler returning one-day worldwide best figures of six for 52.

The 24-year-old made his worldwide debut in 2011, yet the fact he's played just three Tests and 28 one-day internationals since then is testament to how much time Cummins has spent on the treatment table.
