Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry lead Warriors to NBA title

Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (30) celebrates with fans after Game 5 of basketball's NBA Finals between the Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers in Oakland, Calif., Monday, June 12, 2017. "I don't see anything's amusing or anything's to smile about". So you just got to take it tomorrow, and it's on us.

Led by first-year Warriors forward and former NBA MVP Kevin Durant, Golden State held off LeBron James and the resilient visiting Cleveland Cavaliers, winning Game 5 of the 2017 NBA Finals by a 129-120 margin. As he should - he was smoking away the lasting reminder of the Warriors' 3-1 lead.

"I'm happy for him", Curry said. You get punched in the face you want to respond. We know it's not going to be an easy game for us. In Game 4, the Cavs scored most first-quarter AND first-half points in NBA Finals history.

The Warriors, coming off their first loss of the postseason in Friday's 137-116 defeat in Cleveland, are 8½-point favorites over the Cavaliers.

Irving added seven rebounds, four assists and one steal in 40 minutes of action.

"They got us where they want us", James said. Durant finished with 39 points.

"I left everything on the floor every game, so I have no reason to put my head down", said James, who scored a game-high 41 points Monday.

"For us as a team, we have to be more on edge", Kerr said.

What could be a coronation might also give the Warriors a coronary issue.

Needless to say, the Warriors can ill afford the risk of returning to Game 6 back at the Quicken Loans Arena with a 3-2 series advantage.

"They're going to view this as a game seven situation", Cleveland's Richard Jefferson said. The 9-0 burst was completed after Kevin Love picked up his second foul in a game the officials are calling a little tighter after the physical play in Game 4.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been saying they're a better team when their backs are against the wall.

Golden State had an opportunity to become the first team to sweep through the playoffs with a ideal 16-0 record. "That's the only thing that matters", Durant said after Sunday's practice session, via ESPN. Then you add some chatter in there, and that adds some extra motivation. "It's like, 'Whoa.' You remember what can be, what can happen".

It was the third year in succession the two teams had met in the finals.

No team has erased a 3-0 deficit in any series.

But after getting moved off the ball at times, Irving played much better in the two games at home.

"You learn from your mistakes", Green said. "We have been in this situation before".

James shrugged off unbeaten runs and celebration talk and just kept his mind on the moment.

Plenty to lose - There's a line of thinking the Cavs could play freely because they were down in the series 3-1 entering Monday.
