Key takeaways from Attorney General Sessions' testimony

Sessions's recusal came the day after The Post reported the first two meetings, but Sessions said he was already talking with lawyers about whether his Trump campaign work would force him to hand over the Russian Federation investigation to his deputy.

Similar to former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, who testified before the same committee last week, Sessions came out ready to defend himself.

"Mr. Comey said that there were matters with respect to the recusal that were problematic and he couldn't talk about them".

But as the Senate continues to investigate Trump and Russian Federation, it's not clear how long they'll be able to continue avoiding those questions without legal basis.

- Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) June 13, 2017If AG Sessions were truly recused, he should have had nothing to do with firing Comey.

When senators on Tuesday asked Mr. Sessions if he had discussed the Russian Federation investigation or Mr. Comey's firing with Mr. Trump, Mr. Sessions refused to say.

The attorney general said he never heard any suggestions during the campaign that Russian Federation was somehow interfering to help Trump defeat his Democratic challenger, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Democratic senators expressed frustration with Sessions on several occasions.

"We are talking about an attack on our democratic institutions and stonewalling of any kind is unacceptable ... there is no legal basis for this stonewalling", Oregon Senator Ron Wyden said. In the picture, Sessions could be seen speaking with two men who were standing with their backs to the camera.

2 - Burr asked, "From your testimony, you said you don't remember whether the ambassador from Russian Federation was there?"

It is not clear whether Sessions plans to answer all the questions or if he will invoke executive privilege to avoid disclosing private conversations with the president.

He says he is confident that Comey understood and would abide by the Justice Departments rules on communications with the White House about ongoing investigations. Comey's decision to announce previous year that Clinton would not be prosecuted over her emails was a "usurpation" of the Justice Department's authority, Sessions said. "That is false", Sessions said.

"They seem to have collective amnesia about meeting with Russian officials during and after the campaign and only remember when they have been caught", Franken said. "I can tell you for absolute certain".

The attorney general has since recused himself from the Russia investigation - a decision he sought to cast Tuesday as resulting from his role as an adviser on the Trump campaign, rather than because of any inappropriate interaction with Russian officials.

Reports have said Comey told the committee in a closed hearing last week that the undisclosed issue was a possible third meeting with Kislyak.

His impassioned response came after Senate Democrats raised questions about whether Sessions privately met with Sergey Kislyak at an April 2016 foreign policy event at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.

Sessions said he learned from Comey that he felt concerned about being left alone with the president but that, since Comey did not relay details of the conversation, he had no way of knowing it was improper.

Sessions, a former Republican US senator and an early supporter of Trump's presidential campaign, is expected to be asked to explain why he told senators in January that he had no dealings with Russian officials a year ago while serving as an adviser to candidate Trump.

But Sessions proved he is clearly capable of giving an answer in black and white.

"Our committee will want to hear what you are doing to ensure that the Russians - or any other foreign adversaries - can not attack our democratic process like this ever again".
