Obama on Senate bill: It's 'not a health care bill'

It resembles the earlier House bill in important ways, remaking Medicaid and decreasing the federal support for people to buy private insurance.

"That's not true, and that is not fair".

Yesterday, the U.S. Senate made a powerful statement to Utah and the nation: increasing premiums, unaffordable care and regulatory red-tape should not be the standard of health care in this country. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) The bill “doesnt change [protections for] preexisting illnesses, which is good, ” he said.

Even Mr Obama wrote: I was careful to say again and again that while the Affordable Care Act represented a significant step forward for America, it was not ideal, nor could it be the end of our efforts. Over all, the Senate would reduce federal spending by about $1 trillion over 10 years and use nearly that much to cut taxes for rich families and health care companies. Repealing the essential benefits requirements of Obamacare could get us a lot closer. And because California is a high-cost state, premiums and deductibles are likely to spike for some middle-class families. While praising the administration for talking about the issue and forming an opioid commission to look into the problem, Kolodny said it's time for the Trump team to act.

"I've been talking about a plan with heart". The House bill called for $880 billion of cuts; the Senate version's are reported to be even greater.

McConnell also tried to prevent the 2013 government shutdown, but was overridden by tea party forces in the House.

"We're going to pay for it one way or another; there are no free lunches", she said in an interview with The Associated Press. It also would end tax penalties on people who don't buy insurance policies and on larger firms that don't offer coverage to workers, while phasing out the extra money given to states that expanded their Medicaid programs to offer insurance to the working poor.

He said they worry citizens in the 59 to 65 year old range will get hurt the most. Is this really the kind of society we want? In some states, “over time, [patients with chronic illness] might find it increasingly hard to find insurance companies that will offer plans that cover their needs.”.

On the other side, moderate-leaning senators like Susan Collins of ME were also expressing reservations. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., said in a written statement Thursday.

It's also outrageous that 13 senators - all white men - drafted this bill in secret for weeks.

"That's what consumers want, and that's what the Republican majority should give to them".

"It hands enormous tax cuts to the rich and to the drug and insurance industries, paid for by cutting health care for everybody else".

"Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf slammed the bill: "#BCRA makes care worse for everyone".

Thune said this reaction from fellow Republicans makes him feel like they're "in the right place".

Allowing states to opt out of any and all Obamacare regulations, including ones regarding pre-existing conditions, could lead some GOP Senate moderates to oppose the bill. So Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell can afford to lose two members of his caucus but no more and still have the bill pass. "Medicaid provisions included in this bill are particularly problematic".

Democrats say GOP characterizations of Obama's law as failing are wrong, while the Republican effort would boot millions off coverage and leave others facing higher out-of-pocket costs.

The "Buffalo Bribe" was the sort of thing you might expect to be dropped from the Senate version of AHCA, given all the talk about the upper chamber refusing to rubber-stamp the House bill and "starting over" with its own policies and priorities.
