White House says Trump expected to pull US from Paris climate accord

He also quipped President Trump "has to look outside his little bubble" when it comes to climate change.

That's what the top House Democrat is calling President Donald Trump's expected decision to pull the USA from a historic climate agreement. Former Secretary of State John Kerry, who helped negotiate the agreement, responded to a Twitter user who shared a photo of Kerry signing the agreement at the United Nations with his granddaughter on his lap.

He could unilaterally withdraw from the Paris agreement without any action by Congress.

Experts like Australian National University's Climate Change Institute policy professor Mahendra Kuma say there is some concern that Trump's decision could cause a ripple effect, with other countries choosing to leave the agreement.

Guterres said their pledges to limit the global temperature rise to below 2 degrees Celsius and as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius "are historic - but still do not go almost far enough to limit temperature rise". Leaving would be essentially a middle finger salute to the other 195 countries represented in the agreement, most of which have less room for improvement. On Wednesday, Exxon shareholders voted to require the company to produce an annual report examining how the oil and gas giant will be impacted by efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions directed by the Paris agreement.

Tearfund's head of advocacy Paul Cook said: "World leaders need to uphold their commitments to prevent lives and livelihoods being hit hard by an unstable and changing climate".

Trump started chipping away at Obama's environmental actions as soon as he got into office. In the end, even those concerned with job creation and "making America great again" still want to be able to breathe in fresh air.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt and White House Chief Strategist Steven Bannon are among those in support of the decision.

Trump's exit would confirm, once and for all, that his administration will make no serious efforts in the coming years to continue the fight against global warming.

What are the consequences of withdrawing?

This means that in 2017, to tackle climate change, the world needs a more ambitious United States - not a country that will abandon Paris entirely, or at minimum, scale back its commitments to that agreement. A formal withdrawal could take three years.

Almost 200 countries are party to the agreement, which includes individualized carbon emission reduction targets set by each country.

It's still unclear how Trump would legally exit the agreement.

If true, America will now join the ranks of just two other countries who have refused to commit to the Paris agreement: Syria and Nicaragua.

Tesla founder and technology luminary Elon Musk said yesterday he would quit President Donald Trump's business advisory councils if Washington pulls out of the Paris climate accord. The Pope gave Trump copies of his published works on climate change as a parting gift following their meeting on May 24, which some read as an encouragement toward the Paris accord.

White House officials, however, reportedly cautioned that the decision to exit the 2015 worldwide accord was not yet final - something Trump reaffirmed on Twitter, announcing that his final decision would come "over the next few days".
