Paris climate deal: Trump's decision leaves him isolated

Exxon Mobil's Darren Woods said a framework was needed

We are relieved that our elected leaders have joined other countries in reiterating our commitment to the Paris Agreement.

In a speech delivered at the White House's Rose Garden, President Trump indicated that India and China - in his words among the world's leading polluters - were getting off easy. Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department Chair Jonathan Martin, a specialist in weather systems, disagrees with Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and said he believes climate change is a problem that can not be addressed, let alone solved, unless there is a global effort. For years, Trump has been calling global warming a hoax, sometimes alleging that it was invented by China.

He hasn't tweeted about 'warming" or "climate, ' in fact, since the heady days of the Republican presidential primary season.

AFP | US billionaire Michael Bloomberg has offered $15 million to UN efforts to tackle climate change after President Donald Trump announced he is pulling the United States out of the Paris Climate Accord.

He dared opprobrium from foreign leaders, environmentalists, scientists and celebrities to say he was putting the jobs of American workers first.

"We will continue to lead", it vows. And they won't be.

Since these aren't especially appealing options for Trump World, they're going with Door #3: the president's views on the looming crisis are, and must remain, mysterious.

Trump said on Thursday that the USA will leave the Paris climate deal, making it one of three countries-along with Syria and Nicaragua, the latter of which didn't believe the pact went far enough-to hold out of the deal. Major companies from Exxon to Google to Apple are all supporting the Paris Agreement and taking voluntary steps to reduce emissions.

The leaders of France, Germany and Italy said the decision was "regrettable" and that the deal was "non-negotiable".

Citing the need to stay engaged with the administration, business leaders said they would remain in their advisory roles to continue working to influence White House policies.

Trump announced America is "getting out" of a deal he said imposed "draconian" burdens that would cost the United States millions of jobs and billions in cold hard cash.

The US now stands alongside only Syria and Nicaragua in rejecting the accord.

Also, there are no guarantees that other countries won't decide to pull out as their governments or national circumstances change. Vimont is anxious that other countries will back out of the agreement.

This way, the Trump administration, heavily influenced by the fossil-fuel industry, will have less sway over the United Nations climate process, they said.

The 2015 accord brought together 195 countries which each made commitments to meet their own targets. More and more of them are worrying about it.

Trump's announcement on Thursday that he would take the U.S. out of the Paris accord, saying the agreement would undermine the United States economy and cost jobs, has drawn anger and condemnation from world leaders and heads of industry.

The evidence that human action is involved is overwhelming, but even if it's wrong, the only downside to lower greenhouse emissions and fossil fuel consumption is a cleaner world for our descendants, as Sen.
