Pelosi defends leadership following special election loss

Another leadership test for Pelosi, who's weathered many

After a closely watched congressional special election in Georgia resulted in yet another loss for Democrats Tuesday night, it didn't take long for the finger-pointing to begin.

In the wake of Karan Handles election victory over the youthful Democrat candidate Jon Ossoff in Georgia's 6th District special election, and three other less newsworthy special elections elsewhere in the USA, it is only now starting to dawn on democrats that they might actually have a real leadership problem.

"Nancy Pelosi was a great speaker", Rep. Kathleen Rice, D-N.Y., said on MSNBC.

It is hard, of course, for a party to rally behind an agenda when it's out of the White House, and there's plenty of concern after she became an issue in the Georgia election that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is too polarizing a figure to lead such an effort.

The response from some: It better be.

Democrats might want to avoid mimicking President Trump, who foolishly is pretending to believe that Pelosi is helping the Republican Party. The upshot: Democrats did much better in those districts (and in Montana's at-large seat) than they would under normal circumstances. After she was re-elected Democratic leader, the Republican National Committee unfurled a banner that read "Hire Pelosi" outside its headquarters. Trump will see the results in Georgia and conclude that he still has the Democrats' number. Lujan distributed a memo to members that declared "the House is in play" and ticked through polling and recent trends. "I would be very disappointed if she did", Trump said.

"It's that fighting spirit, that perseverance and tenacity that I will take to Washington", she said Tuesday night.

Mr. Ryan, who tried to unseat Ms. Pelosi, Democrat of California, as House minority leader after the November elections, said she remained a political drag on other Democrats. Democrats had pushed the narrative that the vote was a referendum on Trump's presidency.

The top three House Democrats are now Pelosi, who is 77; Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, who is 78; and South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn, who is 76.

The House Democratic leader is seeking to reassure Democrats dejected after a loss in a Georgia special election where the party invested millions of dollars.

Her win comes after losing bids for governor in 2010 and the Senate in 2014, and it builds on a business and political career she built after leaving an abusive home as a teen. "It's time for some change".

Trump himself weighed in over Twitter Thursday morning with digs at Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY.

"They always want to choose our leaders", Pelosi said Thursday.

"One of the disappointing things from the last couple days is that that approach has a little bit of punch to it, it still moves voters", Ryan said. She noted last week's shooting of Republican Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and said politics has become too embittered. She can even argue, like she did on Thursday, that she was instrumental in getting the Democrats back into the House majority in 2006 after 12 years of Republican rule.

Most of the blame has been shifted towards Pelosi.

The media, Republicans and some Democrats are hyping the "Time to get rid of Pelosi" narrative based on not one actual reason that is based in fact. Newt Gingrich, the former U.S. House Speaker and a Trump ally, held the seat for two decades. After all, he said, Democrats appeared to be more energized, had a bigger army of volunteers and outspent the GOP roughly $32 million to $23 million in what was the most expensive House race in US history. They pointed out that there are 70 more House seats that are more competitive than the one in the Atlanta suburbs that the GOP retained on Tuesday.

"She's easy to demonize".

"I think you'd have to be an idiot to think we could win the House with Pelosi at the top", Rep. Filemon Vela, D-Tex., told Politico.

But with Republicans re-energized after the Georgia win, they're praying she doesn't go anywhere anytime soon.

The Democrats can't craft a compelling economic message, according to the Times, because the economy is booming and the people have never had it so good. Trump was thus disliked enough to give Ossoff a chance, but not so unpopular that "a screechingly anti-Trump campaign", as Fallon put it, would have gone over well.
