Penguins take 2-0 series lead over Predators

Hoffman's goal helps Senators beat Penguins to force Game 7

The amusing thing about Game 2 is that it started nearly completely the opposite of Game 1.

The Penguins had difficulty maintaining momentum with several poor power plays.

The Conn Smythe Trophy victor in 2009, Malkin leads the playoffs in scoring with nine goals and 26 points in 21 games. Rinne has ooked shaky in yielding eight goals on 36 shots, but he got the Predators this far and Saros has never started a playoff game. The Penguins scored just 10 seconds into the period when Guentzel scored his second of the game off of a perfectly-placed rebound. Just over three minutes later, the Penguins scored two goals 15 seconds apart to cap a Game 2 victory. Not only did Kunitz help the Penguins reverse course and win the Cup in 2009, but he also contributed 12 points to their triumphant 2016 run and was a gold medalist for Canada at the 2014 Olympics.

The most powerful offence in hockey is proving too much for Pekka Rinne to handle.

Outside of his fresh face and reticent personality, Jake Guentzel has seldom looked like the 22-year-old rookie that he is. The fourth goal came from Evgeni Malkin, when he winged a great wrist shot past Pekka Rinne. He's giving up almost four goals a game in those contests, exactly the number he allowed in both games one and two. The game will be Nashville's first home match of the Final series.

Another goal from Patric Hornqvist was overturned on offside.

P.K. Subban and Malkin dropped the gloves for a fight after all the scoring. "But it's a (seven-game) series".

That describes two National Hockey League players on opposing teams in this year's Stanley Cup Finals between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators.

Nashville dropped Game 1 on Monday 5-3 despite holding Pittsburgh without a shot on goal for 37 consecutive minutes.

Guentzel for MVP? With an NHL-leading 12 goals in the playoffs, rookie Guentzel is making his case.

This time, Pittsburgh's flurry came a little bit later. Game 6 of the Western Conference final, which Nashville won and clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup final, was the only one to draw more viewers. Those numbers ballooned after the first two games against the Penguins.

Pittsburgh has just two shots on five power plays and has not scored on any of them.

This first-period Jake Guentzel goal?

Cullen, a former Moorhead Spuds star, left briefly in the first period after being hit from behind into the boards by Predators D Matt Irwin.

With less than four minutes remaining in the first, Game 1 hero Guentzel tied things up when he followed up a Conor Sheary rebound and snuck a backhand through Rinne's equipment.

Nashville has outshot Pittsburgh 64-39, but the Penguins have a 9-4 advantage in goals, including one empty-netter. Matt Murray has been strong in goal for the Penguins.

Returning home should provide a boost for both Rinne and the Predators. The Predators and Pittsburgh Penguins are scheduled to play Game 3 of the NHL hockey Stanle. Among all of the chaos, the Preds also opened scoring first - and this time it wasn't overturned - with an absolute danglefest from Pontus Aberg.

Nashville has gotten contributions from those like Aberg throughout the playoffs.

Rinne allowed four goals on 11 shots in Game One and has allowed 20 goals over his past six games after conceding just 16 over his first 11 playoff games.

Beyond struggling with zone entries and generating off the rush, Pittsburgh addressed its effort in the game to that point and emphasized the need for a successful start to the third.

Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan is shuffling his lines for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Predators. On the latter goal, Bryan Rust purposefully shot off Rinne's pads for the puck to direct to Guentzel. Some had even suggested the rookie forward be benched for the beginning of the Stanley Cup Final.

The series continues in Nashville for Games 3 and 4.

Rinne has faced the Penguins nine times in his career, and lost all nine of those games.

And that doesn't even include the catfish tossed onto the ice by a Predators fan at PPG Paints Arena in the middle of a second period. Coach Peter Laviolette was aggressively noncommittal when asked point-blank, twice, if Rinne would be his starter in Game 3 on Saturday.
