Transformers Producer Confirms Female Lead 1980s Setting For 2018's Bumblebee Spinoff

The fifth instalment of the Transformers series, Transformers: The Last Knight, has opened to negative reviews from the critics.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian said: "And so the ageless, endless, pointless struggle between good and evil in the Transformer community recommences, and the final explosive showdown seems to be competing with Marvel movies for spectacle". In this episode, Cade discovers that the Transformers have been around since Arthurian times - cue the mud-spattered flashbacks - and it turns out he must carry the torch of knighthood into the present day.

Transformers: The Last Knight now holds a 3.91 out of 5 on ComicBook.com's anticipation rankings.

Thanks to ever-growing box-office figures in worldwide markets rather than here at home, the future is Optimus Prime-big. Check out a video of the interview above, and a transcript below.

Of what plot there is here, this one sees the Transformers somehow intrinsically linked to the history of England, namely King Arthur and his Knights (get it?) and, by extension, Merlin (played with gusto by Stanley Tucci, though you wouldn't know it). You either end up with Rocky V (a film people pretend never happened) or Fast Five (a film people think is one of the best in the franchise). So maybe it doesn't matter if 80 per cent of the movie features Shia LaBeouf, Mark Wahlberg, or Daffy Duck. The action scenes were exceptional and I was impressed to say the least. I'm campaigning, myself, to get my knighthood.

There are plenty of bad things in this film but one of the most egregious has to be the government recruiting Megatron to help them find Cade. Oh, I don't know. However, I was surprised by some of the language used in the movie - I really enjoyed Transformers as a kid and I'm not sure my parents would have allowed me to watch this one. The nonstop pace of the 2 1/2-hour movie stretches out the action, leaving you little time to catch your breath. Bay is good at what he does and Bay is known for what he does, but I don't quite remember the film where we saw Optimus Prime having a dance off with Bumblebee in Jack Rabbit Slims. Audiences fork the dough with every sequel, no questions asked. Don't say we didn't warn you! A plane... preferably a private one that would allow me to go lots of places quickly.

Mark Wahlberg: Yeah and quickly.

But now, look at the breakdown of how much each of those four movies has made domestically versus internationally.

Mark Wahlberg: Extremely, it is. He said, "I am [contracted for more] but look, I signed on to make these movies with Michael".

Where do you think he would go?
