Trump fans want FBI director Mueller axed

Trump may ‘terminate’ Russia probe’s Mueller says president’s pal

The responsibility for appointing (or theoretically firing) Mueller lies with Rosenstein because his boss, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, recused himself in March from all investigations involving Russian Federation and the 2016 elections. Asked in a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing if there was any cause to fire Mueller, Rosenstein flatly replied: "No".

That is the doomsday scenario formulated by some of the president's most extreme backers, who are obviously terrified by the potential findings of the special counsel's investigation of illicit connections between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign.

And a person familiar with Trump's thinking said Tuesday morning that it's "unlikely" the president will fire Mueller, but conceded that it's often hard to predict Trump's behavior.

Ruddy, who had been at the White House Monday, told PBS' Judy Woodruff that "I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel".

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said via email, "Chris speaks for himself".

"The Attorney General may remove a Special Counsel for misconduct, dereliction of duty, incapacity, conflict of interest, or for other good cause, including violation of Departmental policies".

"If there were not good cause, it wouldn't matter to me what anybody says".

House Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters that any talk about Mr Trump wanting to rid himself of the special investigator amounts to rumour. I think he was - the way I interpreted the president's remark was that, if there were tapes, that they would vindicate the president and not Comey.

The White House did not immediately respond to questions about Ruddy's claims.

"I don't think Trump should do anything but the congressional Republicans ought to look into it", Gingrich said. "I think the best thing to do is to let Robert Mueller do his job".

"I can't imagine that that issue is going to arise", he added.

Sessions, who outranks Rosenstein, has recused himself formally from overseeing any part of the Russian Federation investigation. "Special Counsel Mueller will have all appropriate resources to conduct a thorough and complete investigation, and I am confident that he will follow the facts, apply the law and reach a just result".

"Mr. Ruddy never spoke to the president regarding this issue", Spicer said. "When people say when there's smoke, there's fire, they're pointing to actions like this, and it makes the American people distrustful of the White House and their allies", he said.

"Director Mueller is going to have the full degree of independence that he needs to conduct that investigation appropriately", Rosenstein said.

The former FBI director detailed some of his private conversations with Trump and accused Trump of asking him to drop an investigation into the Russian connections of his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

Comey, whose May 9 firing precipitated Rosenstein's decision to hire Mueller, could potentially be a witness in any obstruction of justice case undertaken by the special counsel.

Trump supporters such as Newt Gingrich and others have seemed to be greasing the wheel for the eventual ouster of Mueller.

Christopher Ruddy, a conservative publisher and a longtime friend of Trump, said Monday that Trump was considering removing Mueller, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation director who has been praised for his credibility by Republican and Democratic lawmakers.
