Trump resisting pressure from Europe, pope on climate deal

Musk then said he would have "no choice" but to depart Trump's advisory councils if the U.S. pulled out of the climate deal.

Trump had indicated on his global trip last week that he was thinking he would honor his campaign promise to withdraw from the agreement, according to CNN.

Trump is to meet Wednesday with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who believes the USA should stay in so it can keep its place at the global bargaining table. A March Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll found that 50 percent of Republicans agreed that the USA should lead the global fight against climate change, while 37 percent disagreed and 13 percent were unsure.

The House Democratic leader, Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, referred to it as "a stunning abdication of American leadership and a grave threat to our planet's future".

Washington D.C. [United States], May 31: U.S. President Donald Trump is likely to withdraw the nation from the Paris Agreement on climate change, local media reports said.

The French government said it would pursue a "very aggressive" policy to uphold the Paris accord.

German government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said: "I can only reiterate the well-known position that the German government unequivocally supports the Paris climate agreement and is campaigning for it to be quickly implemented and hopes the U.S. remains committed to this agreement".

Finnish Prime Minister Juha Sipila (JOO'-hah SEE'-pah-lah) says climate change won't be reversed "by closing your eyes".

Pruitt has previously called for the U.S.to withdraw.

That's the conclusion of researchers and scientists evaluating the impact of Trump on the health of the climate.

"By succumbing to pressure from Administrator Scott Pruitt and other advisors, President Trump is ceding the future to the Germans, the Chinese, the Indians, and other nations rather than having the United States continue to lead the world on clean energy solutions".

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned United States that quitting the Paris climate agreement could threaten the country's economic, security and societal status.

While a 2-degree shift wouldn't be noticeable during the course of a day, it would represent a historic change for the Earth as a whole that's faster than any change in the climate since the last ice age ended some 10,000 years ago.

A withdrawal, as supported by Pruitt, would put the United States in the same camp as Syria and Nicaragua: a tiny group of countries refusing to participate in the nearly universally supported Paris climate change agreement. "He didn't want to do anything to put the U.S.at a disadvantage", Cohn said.

Trump promoted his announcement Wednesday night on Twitter, after a day in which USA allies around the world sounded alarms about the likely consequences of a US withdrawal.

That's what Trump says in a tweet, and he adds: "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

"And so all I can say is that we Europeans must really take our destiny into our own hands", she said, according to the dpa news agency.

The precise mechanism for withdrawal hasn't yet been determined, and White House officials cautioned the plans could change until Trump makes his decision public.

The decision, which will be announced this week, would put the United States at odds with almost every other nation on earth, who signed onto the 2015 carbon reduction plan.

On Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer did not answer whether the president believes human activity contributes to climate change.

He tweeted on Wednesday:"I will be announcing my decision on Paris Accord, Thursday at 3:00 P.M. The White House Rose Garden".

The official insisted on anonymity in order to discuss the decision before the official announcement.

A USA decision to withdraw from the accord could further alienate American allies in Europe already wary of Trump and call into question US leadership and trustworthiness on one of the world's leading issues.
