President Donald Trump on Tuesday criticized the House-passed health care bill, calling it "mean" in a meeting with Republican senators and urging them to develop a "more generous" version.

Thune said the group also discussed an effort he is leading to increase the tax credits in the bill to give more assistance to low-income and older people than the House bill did. The GOP is closing in on a deal for a bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, the law colloquially known as Obamacare, outside of the public eye.

House Republicans have pushed through a bill that seeks to ensure people in the country illegally can not get tax credits to pay their health insurance premiums.

Moderates, including Capito, have held great sway in the discussions as Senate leaders worked to secure the 50 votes necessary to pass a health-care bill.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., tweeted Tuesday that Senate Republicans "are trying to hide their monstrous #Trumpcare bill".

"If we're going to repeal the Obamacare taxes, let's do it when we do all the other tax stuff", he said.

The senator said Trump didn't state many policy preferences but said people with pre-existing conditions should be protected and spoke about making tax credits apply to lower-income people rather than allocated exclusively by age as the House bill did. Many states controlled by Republicans took the extra funding from the federal government, so the House bill's repeal of the funding in 2020 has gotten pushback from senators in those states. Republicans control 52 of the 100 seats in the Senate, but there are divisions within the party over the content of the reform bill.

It is good news that senators may make their bill more centrist rather than, as the House did, more austere in order to pass it. "So I will just say that is disconcerting". Though he indicated it's unclear what the bill will ultimately look like, he worries about the impact on the economy if "we don't get in the right direction".

The president says it's important for Republicans to stay united because he's not expecting any help from Democrats.

The group of 13 senators that Trump invited to lunch includes Republicans from both ideological camps: moderate Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski were on the list, as well as conservative Senators Ted Cruz and Mike Lee.

"And that may be adding additional money into it", he continued. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and more conservative members, Portman said, "No, but that wasn't the objective of it".

Many Republican senators who attended the meeting dodged questions afterward.

"That's the part that's moving around on us", he said.

"Don't be the guy who votes to keep Obamacare alive", said a GOP aide who was briefed on the meeting.

Trump will also meet with "Obamacare victims" on Tuesday when he travels to Wisconsin. "We've got huge problems", said Ms. Capito, whose been outspoken about the prescription painkiller and heroin problem that is devastating the USA, particularly in swaths of Appalachia and New England.

Time is of the essence.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell reportedly wants to have a vote on the bill before the week-long July 4 recess.
