UK leader May seen fighting for survival after election failure

Polls suggest well over half of these voters chose Labour, while fewer than one in six picked the Conservatives. I should point out the editor of this paper is George Osborne, who was the chancellor sacked by Theresa May, so perhaps a little bit of settling of scores there, but that is the question. And I started by asking him, how it is that Theresa May, who had been tremendously popular, fell so short?

Not a word in the speech about the drop in the Conservative vote, nor of a campaign, commanded by herself and her aides, which failed to ignite and certainly nothing on the strong increase in the Labor vote led by Jeremy Corbyn, a man she has mocked incessantly since she took office.

"It's an issue very close to my heart and one that I wanted categoric assurances from the prime minister on, and I received (them)", said Davidson, who is engaged to be married to her female partner. Former Labour PM Tony Blair said Corbyn would kill the party such that it would never rise again.

May will also now have to take into account the wishes of her DUP ally, an unapologetically right-wing Christian party with anti-EU tendencies but a desire to see European Union money continue flowing to Northern Ireland. Will the Democratic Unionists get something for their pains?

PARKER: Well, they will for sure.

If the Conservatives can count on the 10 seats won in Northern Ireland by the Democratic Unionist Party, they would have a fragile majority. It's hard to imagine a group more likely to unnecessarily antagonize those they are supposed to be dealing with. And the British government sends money to Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland is the only part of the British Isles where same-sex marriage remains outlawed.

On the plus side, there is still an overwhelming majority in the House of Commons for climate action and a more conciliatory, softer approach to Brexit. So I suspect that the money will be transferred across the Irish Sea when nobody's looking on a Thursday evening in some written parliamentary answer.

President Trump called U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday following a surprising vote in which her party lost their majority.

David Brancaccio: Conservative leader Theresa May, the prime minister - this is not an outcome she would have preferred.

As the smoke cleared in Manchester and the chaos cooled in London, there was a feeling about the United Kingdom that the governing Conservative Party would gain advantage from the attacks. There could have been a leadership contest which would have exposed all the old Tory divisions on Europe. Though such moves will be easier to detect in the 2018 midterms, second thoughts among voters already are evident from the surge of support for Democratic candidates in special elections from Montana, Virginia and Tennessee to Georgia and SC. The opposition Labor Party, led by Jeremy Corbyn, gained 32 seats. It's not going to be revisited no matter how this election sorts out? I think probably before this election you could have assumed it was going to happen. She will nearly certainly have to fend off strong leadership challenges precisely when she must settle such complex matters as the rights of European Union citizens living in Britain, the renewal of a historically fraught 310-mile land border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and the politically unpopular Brexit "bill" for payment of budget contributions assured by her predecessor. It's one way to avoid a hard Brexit I suppose.

Pressed that Mrs May now had no mandate for her Brexit vision, Tory MP Nadhim Zahawi told BBC Newsnight: "You're absolutely right and to pretend otherwise would be insulting your viewers".

"Imagine she survives until autumn of next year", he said. Ruth Davidson, leader of Conservatives in Scotland, where the party did well, said the results showed that the Conservatives should prioritise good trade relations with the European Union.
