Unseeded Ostapenko rallies to win French Open

Wimbledon is the next grand slam tournament of the year next month and Ostapenko's style of play should be well suited to playing on grass. She said: "I knew Simona is a great player and she was playing great".

She even received a phonecall from Latvia's president.

She stormed through the last five games in a row, apparently free of nerves, to clinch victory and grab her place among the elite of women's tennis.

It was not always like that.

"I'm really happy, but I still have to improve some things and to get better as player", she said.

She added: "It's a tough day today because I couldn't win but let's work, let's keep working, let's believe". It's like for soccer, made for soccer.

"And I have full faith that one of these days she's going to hold one of these trophies".

Halep, the runner-up in 2014 also, hailed Ostapenko.

However, she admitted that when she came across a grass court for the first time, it was hardly love at first sight.

This was now a real test of Halep's new-found positive attitude, with the Romanian having been briefly dumped earlier this season by coach Darren Cahill because he did not like her mindset.

Kuerten's 1997 victory came on the day Ostapenko was born. "So I want to really hit the ball [hard]".

"We need personalities, and she's a personality", seven-time French Open victor Chris Evert told Eurosport. But Halep is mainly a defensive player, and does a great job of it, but she didn't quite have the luxury of being unscarred by failure. That's unbelievable. There's not so many players like that'.

Jakovleva has taken a step back and watched half of the tournament on TV at home before travelling to Paris. "She deserved to win", said the Romanina.

"Parade?" she giggled when asked if she would be welcomed back with a public ceremony in Riga.

Ostapenko recovered from a set and 3-0 down to reverse the momentum of the third seed who also played the 2014 Roland Garros final, losing to Maria Sharapova.

For Halep, bidding to join compatriots Ilie Nastase and Virginia Ruzici as major winners, it was a second final defeat in four years at Roland Garros.

She pursued ballroom dancing and contested the Latvian national championships before deciding to concentrate on tennis.

Halep broke for 3-1 when Ostapenko drilled long, but the latter retrieved it the next game with a thumping return. When she drilled a final backhand victor down the line, Ostapenko dropped her racket to the clay and held her arms aloft in delight and disbelief.

Ostapenko's carefree attacking tennis ultimately proved too strong for the consistency and experience of Halep, with the favourite helpless by the closing stages.

Halep had held on to a tight first set and raced away to a 3-0 lead in the second. The pair argued at the end of their match after Broady claimed Ostapenko should have been disqualified for throwing her racquet at a ball boy.

Until Roland Garros, Ostapenko was best known outside of Latvia as a racquet-throwing villain after an incident in Auckland in January, when she nearly hit a ball boy.

"Jelena won this match, Simona did not lose it", the Australian told reporters.

"I think it was a good tournament". When she'd miss, she would slap her thigh or crack her racket on the red clay or raise a palm as if to say, "What was up with that shot?"
