Vegas Golden Knights fill out roster with National Hockey League expansion draft

Vegas's selection was 35-year-old Deryk Engelland, one of two pending unrestricted free agents the Golden Knights drafted. On Wednesday morning, after submitting the final 30-name list to the National Hockey League, it finally became official.

Yes, the Golden Knights seemed to get this right.

In 1999, the Atlanta Thrashers selected 26 players in the expansion draft. I think I'm up for the challenge.

Fleury was long expected to be the man in net for Vegas, which also got a 2020 second-round pick from the Pittsburgh Penguins for the agreement to select the 32-year-old with three Stanley Cup rings.

After being one of the last two teams on the ice in the Stanley Cup Final, the Pittsburgh Penguins will be one of the first to take it when the National Hockey League begins the 2017-18 season. Fading into the background behind Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and other prominent Penguins was never a problem, but that's not going to be possible in Vegas.

Side deals prevented the team from acquiring players such as Eric Staal and Matt Dumba.

If not, there will be plenty of talent available at six - particularly at center. Vegas has name players, if not potential stars.

Here's one thing we know from the Vegas expansion draft: The team is clearly building for the future.

However this roster shakes out come the opening game of their inaugural season on October 6 against the Stars in Dallas - and then the first home-opener at T-Mobile Arena on October 10 against the Coyotes - it's clear his team has a good chance to have a better first season than any expansion team in history.

The expansion draft itself was mostly anticlimactic, as the names of numerous new Golden Knights had already leaked out. Nolan Patrick, who played for assistant GM Kelly McCrimmon's Brandon Wheat Kings, is an NHL-ready centre who could drum up excitement and sell tickets in the first year of the franchise.

There is one definite downside to losing a player like Nikita Gusev. In a lot of cases, teams gave up draft picks to prevent certain players from being chosen.

Bill Foley, owner of the Vegas Golden Knights, poses before the NHL Awards, Wednesday, June 21, 2017, in Las Vegas. "What surprised me was the quality of some of our forwards that we were able to get out of this situation, moving players around".

Did they get enough from Anaheim and Minnesota?

But there were some surprises, such as Colorado Avalanche goalie Calvin Pickard being the first player officially selected by the team. But the team won't be all defence. Neal was ready once again to take off, and he showed his offensive game in the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Penguins will raise the franchise's fifth Stanley Cup championship banner to the rafters at PPG Paints Arena on October 4 prior to their season-opening game against the visiting St. Louis Blues.

Casey Mittelstadt and Michael Rasmussen are both options at center who will likely be there for the Golden Knights, and Mississauga sniper Owen Trippett is a winger McPhee could look at. "You just want to establish a friendship and a culture right away, and it starts right now and leads into training camp and continues forward to the first game".

On the hierarchy of goaltender performance graphed earlier, we had Fleury as the 15th best stopper in the league on a rate basis. "It should be fun". He will supplement the Vegas Golden Knights forward line, and he has playoff experience as an added asset.

Which is fine! This team's not built to win.

Shea Theodore is a promising prospect, but why take on Clayton Stoner's contract? The Golden Knights also chose forward David Perron, who had 18 goals with the St. Louis Blues, and New York Rangers forward Oscar Lindberg and Edmonton Oilers defenseman Griffin Reinhart, the fourth overall pick of the 2012 draft. There was also an interesting trade offer that made its way to the draft floor. Much better to do what McPhee did, and accept picks in exchange for agreeing not to take actual useful players.

For now, Vegas has a team. He played two seasons in Vancouver, before he was dealt to Tampa Bay prior to the 2014/15 season. One person even shouted that he loved the newest member of the team. "I think it will go well".

While many have described this as one of the weakest drafts in recent history, McCrimmon disagrees.
