Chasing a paltry score of 218, India recovered from early hiccups, thanks to a brilliant partnership between Rohit (124) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (67) to help the Men in Blue cross the line easily.

It is also the highest eighth-wicket partnership in a successful chase in ODIs. So, the India Cricket team is with a 2-0 lead in the five-game series.

A fantastic start witnessed in this match which follows a heap of wickets as well as it is a common feature with Sri Lanka's batting in this series and there are no opportunities' for the team to witness the second game.

Kapugedara went on to make 40 runs before he was clean bowled by Bumrah. They lost by 3 wickets in the last one and rain also hit it at Pallekele on Thursday.

However, before India's innings could get underway, the heavens parted and India's target was revised to 231 runs off 47 overs.

India started their reply weakly.

Asked how he countered Dananjaya, who was on fire, Bhuvneshwar said, "I had a plan against him".

Dananjaya trapped Sharma leg before for 54 and Dhawan (49) swept Milinda Siriwardene towards fine leg where Angelo Mathews lunged to take a stunning catch.

Earlier, Shikhar Dhawan (5), Virat Kohli (3), Lokesh Rahul (17) and Kedar Jadhav (0) failed to step up to the occasion and were dismissed cheaply. "I see no reason why Hardik Pandya can't become that for India".

He dealt two more blows to leave India reeling on 131-7 when Dhoni reprised his finisher's role and Kumar proved a ideal foil as they bailed out India with a century partnership.

Batting at number eight in his first test innings in Galle, Pandya scored 50 off 49 deliveries with five fours and three sixes. "Then three-four wickets fell quickly and so it was a bit of a panic situation for us".

"Disappointed, we came really close and we couldn't finish it", Sri Lanka skipper Upul Tharanga said after the loss.

"Credit to him, he capitalized on the hesitation because we were not reading him too well. We tried to keep it simple and not let the asking rate go beyond 6-7", he elaborated. "Unlucky we didn't get that wicket", he added. "Our bowling and fielding has improved".

The only wish that remained non-granted was that of the Sri Lankan fans and the team to end the game on the winning side. Good to come through eventually.
