Secrecy surrounds Interior Department's sham review of public lands

Bears Ears National Monument in Utah is one such highly controversial monument amongst miners and oil drillers, who opposed the monument, and the Navajo tribe, who celebrated its designation by former president Obama in 2016, The New York Times reports.

"Unfortunately, he's keeping the details of that decision secret, providing nothing more than a brief report summary that fails to name the monuments he suggested cutting".

"The Antiquities Act allows presidents to protect public land".

Zinke trekked to Bears Ears in May to tour the national monument and meet with stakeholders on both sides of the issue and a month later he issued interim recommendations. Two days later, a second order - called "Implementing An America-First Offshore Energy Strategy" - expanded the review to marine monuments, including the largest contiguous fully protected conservation area under US jurisdiction, the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument.

So far, Zinke has released his findings for seven of the monuments on the list. They provide unique opportunities for adventure and solitude, and many have traditional value to Native American communities. Nearly unanimously, commenters want the President to keep his hands off the monuments, according to a survey of 1.3 million of those comments that was released Tuesday by Key-Log Economics, a Virginia-based consultancy that applies ecological economics research to land and natural-resource issues. And his plan's not yet been released publicly, The New York Times reported.

The Carrizo Plain will remain a national monument if President Donald Trump follows the advice of his interior secretary.

President Trump is likely to pursue two options for acting on the recommendations. "An attack on one monument is an attack on all of them". Bishop echoed that, calling efforts to conserve national monuments as something coming from groups that make "a nice income" through lawsuits, an obvious dig at organizations such as the Center for Biological Diversity, publishers of The Revelator.

Zinke did not recommend abolishing any monuments.

Utah was the first stop on a tour of national monuments that Zinke conducted this year.

The Conservation Alliance will work closely with our member companies and our partners in the conservation community to respond to any attempt to diminish our National Monuments.

As Jacqueline Savitz of Oceana said to AP, "A change can be a small tweak or near annihilation".

"This exercise was nothing more than a pretext for selling out our public lands and waters as a political favor to Big Oil and other special interests who want to pad their profits", said Karpinski.

A statement from Americans for Prosperity thanked Zinke for giving Trump a "series of recommendations created to give additional flexibility to local communities impacted by overly broad management of federal lands under the Antiquities Act". Zinke also vowed that no federal land would be sold or transferred.

Tribal officials have lobbied hard to preserve Bears Ears, which boasts extensive ancestral Pueblo artifacts and rock art.

"Bears Ears is an American wonderland of sandstone canyons, desert mesas, and forested highlands sacred to Native American peoples and important to us all".

The public overwhelmingly supports the continued protection of the national monuments.

"Protecting federal land doesn't mean not using it", he added from his home in the mountains of Colorado.

No president has tried to eliminate a monument, but some have reduced or redrawn the boundaries on 18 occasions, according to the National Park Service. Referring to the "massive federal land grab" of his predecessors, Trump said, "It never should have happened". The American people deserve to know what Sec.
