American flights from those airports will be stopped through Sunday and flights to many Caribbean airports already hit by Irma are suspended until next week, the company said.

However, some Floridians are complaining that certain airlines are trying to profit off a possibly life-threatening situation.

Airlines are defending their prices same ticket prices go up as seats fill up.

She said flights over the weekend to the path of the hurricane are still set as scheduled, but airlines could change plans based on how the storm unfolds.

"It was very scary", she said.

Vazquez and her husband had flights booked through Sun Country. They pair said people should always evacuate.

On Thursday night, the airport had a different sort of chaos: A disturbed man with a knife was reportedly shot after getting on the tarmac and getting into a confrontation with an officer. The airline extended cancellations in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic through Friday and scrubbed flights in Cuba and the Bahamas Friday and Saturday. The airway has waived baggage costs and in-flight pet fees for those traveling from places covered by an emergency weather waiver.

Bernie Brown, of Tampa, Florida, came to Stamford on business, he says.

"If it flies, it's not going to be in south Florida", said Ross Feinstein, a spokesman for American. "Thankfully we don't have ties like family or children in Miami, so we can afford to get out".

Delta did not immediately respond to a call from InsideEdition.com seeking comment.

Delta is a one of the few remaining US airlines that has meteorologists on staff, creating forecasts for its operations and assisting dispatchers, pilots and ground crew. American Airlines added 3,600 seats and 16 flights out of Miami.

Major carriers had already stopped flying out of other parts of Florida in preparation for Irma, which is bringing winds of 120 miles per hour.

Delta: Its last operation will be the 2:44 p.m. Saturday flight to Cincinnati.

Danny Mrohs said he had to stand his ground Wednesday when trying to change his flight out of OIA. One other flight showed a ticket above $1,000.

"There's only so much airline capacity to any destination. They intervened & helped us out", she wrote.

"It is scary", Comer said. "I want to be there earlier and not spend Irma right here in Miami".

But Comer's daughter only has $500 saved.

Under pressure from some members of Congress following social media reports, airlines have taken the unusual step of publicly announcing price caps on tickets out of areas in Irma's course. People told me there were a few $99 seats on JetBlue from Fort Lauderdale to Philadelphia, but then they were gone. That includes government taxes. Also, South Florida and UConn called off their game in CT because of travel concerns. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) told the news site. However, there are some airlines that have followed JetBlue's lead.
