Emma Stone: I started therapy for anxiety when I was seven

King (Emma Stone) is a top player on the Women's Tennis Association circuit, her only rival being the Australian Margaret Court (Jessica McNamee).

In the excellent American Masters: Billie Jean King, which aired in 2013 on PBS, King said that she recognized the inequities in the sport early on.

- Associated Press account of the September 20, 1973 match. "We both knew what we wanted to do at a young age", says King. Pretty soon, us fellows aren't going to be able to go to a ballgame. "That win had a huge sociological effect".

But that's only through the college level. "You should know you just changed them".

"Of course we [also] had fun talking about tennis". She is a woman already fighting an up-hill battle, and now she has been shackled with weights. There are so many moving parts in how that comes to pass on a film to film basis.

"I saw Larry as a really complex character in an incredibly complex time". It is very disappointing. "[But] the women that I knew, we talked about it for weeks and weeks and weeks".

The pill-gulping Riggs is a 5-2 favorite.

It is hard not to sympathize with King in these moments. Insisting that he can beat any woman, he challenges then-number-one Margaret Court, a devout anti-feminist who nearly dutifully loses to his dinks and lobs in mortifying fashion.

Riggs was the ultimate self-promoter. She was ranked number one in the world in 1966, and won 12 career Grand Slam singles titles, including six Wimbledons.

Riggs was cut from the same cloth, but the matches were legit.

King was one of the best female tennis players for much of the '60s and '70s. Gifts were exchanged, as well, with King presenting Riggs with a box containing a pig, and Riggs giving King an oversized Sugar Daddy.

At the time, the match was one of the biggest televised sporting events in history, with more than 90 million people watching on ABC. More than 30,000 people were in the seats.

STONE: (As Billie Jean King) What do you mean?

"What happened?" Riggs said, repeating a question after it was done.

STEVE CARELL: (As Bobby Riggs) You and me, Billie Jean - three sets, five sets - your choice.

Battle of the Sexes is a spirited, frequently amusing drama whose significance sneaks up on you in much the same way as does its backdrop, a polarized America beset by cultural ferment and moral uncertainty.

EMMA STONE: (As Billie Jean King) It says here that you're offering the men's victor $12,000 and 1,500 to the women's.

But Backus, looking back, views the event with mixed emotions.

"No pressure, by the way, this is the first thing she said to me", says Stone, delightedly needling King, sitting by her side during a recent interview at the US Open tennis tournament.

STEVE CARELL: (As Bobby Riggs) Now, don't get me wrong.

She explained her drawing, saying: "So I was nine and in therapy at that time, this is me with anxiety who is a little green monster".

- AP story after the match. In 1973, King reluctantly agreed to play a match against middle-aged former tennis star Bobby Riggs that was billed as the "Battle of the Sexes".

"What it really did was give women the opportunity to be on TV and show they could be successful in sports". The idea that everyone who stands in the way of our dreams is some hater is just bullshit we feed ourselves to feel good.

Unfortunately, change has come far too slowly. While on a book tour earlier this year, John McEnroe said that on the men's circuit Serena Williams, victor of 23 Grand Slams and arguably the greatest tennis player ever, would be ranked "like 700 in the world". He constantly puts down his competition using derogatory remarks such as, "I like them in the bedroom and in the kitchen". Same month we were born.

Timely as ever considering the ongoing fight for equality, not to mention the parallels with our ludicrous political climate, "Battle of the Sexes" is a captivating crowd-pleaser. "Or they're asked about their boyfriends", Taylor said. "It was scary for all of us because it was such an important scene and they hadn't had much interaction on the first day", said Dayton. In "Battle of the Sexes" while there is a clear victor in some regards, the larger ideas are what hit home.

It was only the beginning.

While "Battle of the Sexes" offers a happy ending, it still boasts themes that are heartbreakingly relevant considering the movie takes place 34 years ago.
