Roy Moore v Luther Strange LIVE election results

Trump supported Sen. Luther Strange with a Tweet sent before voting began Tuesday morning. Unusual was Alabama's attorney general before being appointed to the Senate; in the former position he represented the state in several lawsuits opposing President Barack Obama's policies. Shelby backed unusual in the runoff, but said he would support Moore if he won.

Moore's victory garnered congratulations from Sens. "The people of Alabama are united behind the conservative agenda Republicans are championing in Washington".

Moore led unusual by about 25,000 votes in the crowded August primary, which went to a runoff between the two because neither topped 50 percent in the voting. "#MAGA." The president also removed that post after Strange's defeat. Moore, meanwhile, has reveled in casting himself as an outsider.

Moore faces Democrat Doug Jones in the December 12 election.

That a Trump-endorsed candidate who is well-known in the state - odd was the state Attorney General before being appointed to the US Senate - should lose, and lose by double-digits, should be extraordinarily embarrassing to the president.

Odd said he takes "full responsibility" for his loss, and it isn't the president's fault.

Trump went to Huntsville the previous Friday, where he pitched odd as the most electable general election candidate.

"A vote for Judge Roy Moore is a vote for Donald J. Trump", Bannon said.

SLF President and CEO Steven Law said Tuesday that Moore won the nomination "fair and square" and the group will now back him. It wasn't enough to carry odd over Moore's populist tidal wave, even in a state Trump won by 30 points.

Moore, 70, is a staunch conservative who has made a litany of contentious statements over the years. The first time, he had flouted a court order to remove a Ten Commandments monument from the courthouse.

Unusual thanked his supporter and President Donald Trump, who had campaigned for odd days earlier in Huntsville, AL.

Moore is most famous for the fights that twice led to his departure from the state's high court.

Incumbent Sen. Luther Strange wished jurist Roy Moore well after losing the Alabama Republican primary for Senate. Akin had been favored to win his race until he told an interviewer that pregnancy rarely occurs as a result of what he called "legitimate rape".

Moore prevailed despite being heavily outspent by unusual and his allies, but the newly minted GOP nominee has a long history in the state that endeared him to religious conservatives.

But his close ties to party leaders proved to be a liability with some voters, who questioned whether former Governor Robert Bentley appointed him to Sessions's seat in an attempt to avoid prosecution for a sex scandal.

Although Trump ultimately endorsed Strange, Alabama voters were smart enough to recognize that Moore was the real Trump candidate.

His campaign has emphasized his endorsement from Trump. Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon used his website Breitbart to rally hard for Moore, and Trump backers from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) to Fox News host Sean Hannity supported him as well. And Bannon teamed up with Moore for a rally Monday night near Mobile, Alabama. Despite that endorsement, Trump told a crowd of rally attendees in Huntsville, Ala.

One of Moore's supporters was Roy Jenkins of Opelika, who braved the midday heat to cast his ballot at the Opelika Sportsplex and Aquatic Center. "We have blacks and whites fighting, reds and yellows fighting, Democrats and Republicans fighting, men and women fighting", Moore said (paywall).

Moore had contended that Alabama county probate judges, who are in charge of issuing marriage licenses, did not have to follow the U.S. Supreme Court's 2015 ruling that struck down all remaining state bans on same-sex marriage. "For the vice president and the president of the United States to come here on my behalf means more than I can possibly say".

Moore's second go as Alabama chief justice ended in as much controversy as the first. Moore said he supports the president and his agenda. Two years later, after Republicans won the majority in the upper chamber, Shelby switched parties.

Those same 15 months could be an interesting time for GOP leaders in Congress as well - along with lawmakers up for re-election next year - as they may face more insurgent candidates from inside their own party, and possibly news of other Republicans who decide not to run again in 2018. As a judge he ruled that being gay was grounds for losing your kids in custody cases, while calling homosexuality "abominable, detestable, unmentionable, and too disgusting and well known to require other definition or further details or description".
