Hundreds Injured As Police Try To Stop Catalan Independence Vote

Catalonia goes on strike to protest independence

The Government has urged authorities in Spain to reduce tensions over the controversial independence referendum in Catalonia.

"Thanks to their irresponsible behaviour, those [Catalan] authorities have put the social identity of Catalonia and all Spain at risk", he said.

The address comes on the heels of Sunday's Catalan independence referendum, which violated the Spanish Constitution and was marked by police aggression against peaceful demonstrators who were trying to vote. Officials said 90% of voters backed independence during the referendum, with the turnout reaching 42.3%. Spain maintains the view that that vote was not legitimate and legal, but that kind of strength of feeling can not simply be ignored.

Catalonia's emergency services said Sunday they had treated 91 people and 11 police officers were injured in a police crackdown at polling stations for an independence referendum banned by Madrid.

More than 840 people needed medical assistance following violent charges by Spanish civil guard officers in ugly scenes as part of Spain's deepest constitutional crisis for decades.

The world was shocked on Sunday by footage of Spanish national police striking out at protesters across the region, with some of the bloodiest clashes occurring in Catalan capital Barcelona.

By Sunday night, almost 2.3 million of the region's 5.3 million voters had cast ballots.

Puigdemont said there was now no contact between the government in Madrid and his devolved administration.

"The law-governed state has preserved its power", Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy commented on the events in the autonomous community. The attempt to stop the vote came after Spain's Constitutional Court ruled that the referendum violated the country's constitution because it "does not recognize the right to self-determination and establishes that sovereignty resides with Spanish citizens collectively", according to the Washington Post.

The commission, the executive arm of the 28-nation European Union, said in a Twitter message that "these are times for unity and stability, not divisiveness and fragmentation". During Spain's June friendly against Colombia in Murcia, a city in southeast Spain, he was jeered by supporters who oppose Catalonia independence.
