Twenty-one deaths are now linked to the flu, according to the state Department of Public Health.

One month into the winter, the flu and its effects have not been as prevalent at Newton Medical Center as in normal years - a fact that seems to contradict findings elsewhere in New Jersey and the country. The H3N2 subtype has accounted for 78% of the positive flu specimens tested since October 1, 2017, the latest report said.

But officials don't think that will be the case forever - so they're urging people to get the flu vaccine and take steps to stop the spread of illness.

However, in comparing last year's flu season trends, the current 2017/2018 flu season is above the number of cases from last year at this time, she said.

It is further noted that the flu vaccine is effective in reducing the severity and duration of influenza, though it isn't a 100 percent effective remedy.

The State Department of Health says it has never seen this many flu out breaks this early in the flu season.

"While there are indications the flu season may now be peaking, we also know that the flu season will be continuing for many more weeks", said Jim Blumenstock, chief of health security for the Assn. of State and Territorial Health Officials, in a call with reporters this week.

"There's no question that the people who got their flu shots this year got less sick than the people who didn't", Dr. Brahim Ardolic, chairman of emergency medicine at Staten Island University Hospital, told CNN.

"If you get flu and then you get pneumonia on top of your flu, which is what happens to a lot of these people, you're not gonna do well", he said.

One measure of the season is how many doctor or hospital visits are because of a high fever, cough and other flu symptoms. Avoiding contact with individuals who have been exposed or have the flu already and getting plenty of rest and drinking fluids can help boost the body's immune system. For some, Tamiflu, antiviral prescription medication, can make symptoms less severe if taken within two days of the onset.

Smith said children and adults older than 65 should get their flu shot because the virus can easily turn into something worse for them.

Some of the symptoms of influenza include fever, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, headache, muscle aches, and extreme fatigue. "This would mean the vaccine would not need to be updated as often-if at all, and the virus would be less likely to escape vaccine-induced immunity".

"We've had a tough year", said Dr. Ken Hempstead with Kaiser Permanente.
