Arctic Front Arrives Tuesday; Freezing Rain and Sleet Possible

More than 70 million people are under winter weather alerts from states stretching from ME to Texas, as a large swath of snow and ice approaches.

The snow is expected to start Tuesday morning in the mountains west of our area, and then work its way into our region about 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Temperatures will drop down to 10°.

"A band of light precipitation will accompany the front as it passes". As the day goes on, the precipitation could change to snow.

A cold front is bringing rain that is expected to turn into freezing rain and sleet sometime before dawn, creating risky conditions on the roads. Slick spots will become likely on many roadways from Wednesday night through late morning Thursday. Accumulating snow is expected to occur everywhere, with amounts ranging from 3 to 6 inches in the winter storm warning area, to between one and 3 inches elsewhere. As of 5 a.m., a winter storm warning remained in effect for parts of south and eastern Arkansas.

Snow is also starting to show up in Rising Sun.

Snow may initially be light before becoming steadier through the evening. The snow should taper off Wednesday afternoon, the weather service said.

More than 10 counties in South Central Texas are expected to see icy and freezing conditions throughout the day.

This system will likely have the biggest impact on travel.

Wednesday should be mostly sunny, with a high near 22 and southwest winds at 10 to 15 miles per hour, gusting as high as 25 mph and producing wind chill values of zero to 10 below. This all depends on how soon the snow ends, if the sky clears and if temperatures warm above freezing. But overnight lows Wednesday and Thursday are expected to dip into the low and mid teens. With high pressure in control across the east, we'll enjoy a tranquil weather pattern for the second half of the week.

Check back for updates and read Wednesday's Arkansas Democrat-Gazette for full details.
