Simona Halep, the top seed, and Caroline Wozniacki, the second seed, will meet in the finals as they try for their first Grand Slam win.

The victor will also be World No 1 when the next rankings are released. "It's been a great tournament to me", the twice French Open runner-up told the crowd.

A Wozniacki victory would ensure she leapfrogs Halep to become world No.1 when the new WTA rankings are released on Monday - exactly six years after she last occupied the throne.

So, who will win the women's singles title? Simona Halep of Romania hits a shot against Karolina Pliskova of Czech Republic.

Halep should have won that point, with Wozniacki scampering from one side of the court to the other just to keep the ball in play before she produced a stunning cross-court backhand that caught her opponent on the hop and led to a smashed victor. "It's fine. I cried, but now I'm smiling", Halep said.

Little wonder Denmark's most accomplished tennis player described herself as feeling like she was playing with "house money" at Melbourne Park. So every day I just played to feel the ball 15 minutes, and that was it.

Wozniacki responded: "It means a lot to me". "I can play better and better in the future".

The American said she had been "too nervous to watch", adding: "I'm so proud of my friend". "I make first round 16, quarters and semis - I play (Zverev), Novak, Roger", he said.

Unsurprisingly, the epic on centre court caught attentions on Twitter, and a certain Serena Williams was quick to tweet her congratulatory message to Wozniacki. But, you know, I think I did pretty well with all the things that were going on.

While points and rankings are quickly forgotten, grand slam silverware lasts forever. These are the moments we practice for, these are the moments we've prepared for our whole careers. The feet were not good enough.

Wozniacki, who hugged the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Trophy as she spoke during the ceremony, said: "I've dreamed of this moment for so many years and to be here today is a dream come true". That's why I'm going to the net. "I had a tough period where I had a few injuries. And again, I'm sorry".

When they resumed neither of them could hold their serve until Wozniacki, after having a timeout to have her left knee strapped, held for 5-4 to force Halep to serve to stay in the match. Whilst it is Halep whose weapons are far more damaging, this was clear to see in Halep's win over Kerber.

"That was a huge game to go a double-break up", she said after Halep improved her head-to-head record against the Czech to 6-1.

An energy-zapping set lasting 50 gruelling minutes seemed to take its toll on Halep.

When it came time to do the same against Caroline Wozniacki in the final, Halep's luck had finally run out.

Her previous Grand Slam final defeats came against Kim Clijsters at the 2009 US Open and Williams, also in NY, four years later.

Their broadcast of the women's singles final will begin at 7pm (AEDT) and conclude about half an hour after the end of the match, allowing for interviews and the presentation to be broadcast.
