The government will run out of money on Friday if it does not pass another short-term spending bill. "They've had months and months to make this happen and have failed to do so".

GOP defense hawks say a short-term spending bill cripples the military and the country's national security.

The bill would not include protections for the young people described as "Dreamers", Republican Representative Mike Simpson told reporters after his party's closed-door meeting. Republicans have said this notion of "parity" is a non-starter.

Trump wrote on Twitter that if the government were shut down over amnesty and border security, the military would be the biggest loser. Divisions between Republicans and Democrats deepened amid an uproar over Trump's reported use of the word "shithole" when speaking about African countries last week.

Republicans control every branch of government, but they need Democratic votes to pass a funding bill to avert a government shutdown. The Democrats want a showdown.

In a bid to ensure "America first", US President Donald Trump on Sunday pushed for a merit-based immigration system, saying he only wants people who can help America become "strong and great again".

Corey Stewart, a pro-Trump Republican Senate candidate in Virginia, said Trump is picking the right battle.

Why do Democrats oppose the rule of law? The bill put forward by the House would fund the government until February 16. Late last week, the hardline House Freedom Caucus dug in its heels and proposed draconian legislation that would be a non-starter in the Senate.

"Specifically, one of the areas that really, really fell short was the funding for border security", Sanders said. A bipartisan solution is more likely than ever because Republicans can trust the Trump administration to ensure that Democrats' legalization objectives do not occur unless and until Republicans' enforcement goals have been achieved. D-Mass., joined AFGE President J. David Cox in a pro-Social Security worker rally on Capitol Hill on January 18. But the White House is not on board with the plan yet.

"Jesus emerged from the despised and disregarded town of Nazareth, a reminder that we ought never pre-judge any person based on his or her community of origin", the EIT statement said. "I think this week would be fairly Herculean".

The President's controversial comments to lawmakers in the Oval Office came after he held on-camera bipartisan talks at the White House last week in which he appeared open to making a deal with both Republicans and Democrats. Steve Newman (R-Lynchburg) who voted against the bills.

When the Senate approved a similar short-term spending bill in December, 17 Democrats plus ME independent Angus King voted to keep the government open.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) called Trump's remarks "repulsive", and characterized the protection of DREAMers as "a moral imperative".

On Monday, Trump told reporters that Democrats did not want to cut a deal on DACA.

Democrats voting against that December bill included senators who might seek the presidency in 2020 and would love support from their party's liberal voters, including Booker and Kamala Harris of California.

On the left, liberal groups are ramping up pressure on Democrats to resist any spending plan.

Terminating work permits for the approximately 33,000 Dreamers in Florida would cost the state's economy $1.5 billion a year, according to FWD.us, an advocacy group founded by technology industry leaders.

Kirsten Gillibrand - want to play hardball, refusing to vote for anything that doesn't secure the fate of those who gained legal status under former President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

This is the story of how President Trump tossed millions of young immigrants into treacherous political waters and almost capsized government.

"For now, Congress needs to keep the government running", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, said. A shutdown now would be "a manufactured crisis", he argued.
