Australian Open: Elise Mertens Routs Elina Svitolina to Reach Semifinals

Kyle Edmund's run at the Australian Open came to end with a semi-final defeat by Marin Cilic.

The Croatian showed good form in both matches, relying on his huge serve in the important moments, and admitted he was pleased with the serve but it was tricky to find his rhythm agains Edmund. "I think tennis is getting more and more popular, which we really want also".

I'd have understood if the knee had failed, though. The two-time U.S. Open runner-up also had to save match points to reach her first Australian Open final.

"Overall I'm feeling really good", Cilic said.

Cilic broke him a second time to take the match into a fifth set but with Nadal noticeably limping between points, the Spaniard eventually walked to the umpire and conceded.

Cilic has made the semi-finals at Melbourne Park once before, in 2010, when he was beaten in four sets by Andy Murray.

Cilic, playing some superb tennis, kept the tempo up in the third set breaking in the third game to go 2-1 up.

"I started to feel the muscle little bit exhausted in the third, but playing normal", Nadal explained. "It was my first match on Rod Laver Arena and it's very special", he said. "I was hoping he was going to be OK with the scan, hoping the news was not bad".

Cilic, the 2014 US Open champion, struck 83 winners to set up a clash with 49th-ranked Briton Kyle Edmund, who stunned third seed Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Cilic trails the Swiss ace 8-1, but leads Chung 3-0 in their meetings.

Edmund had never recovered from losing the first two sets to win a match as a professional, but will be rewarded with a place in the top 25 when the new rankings are published on Monday.

And it appeared to work as the Brit got a foothold in the second set, serving better and making the most of his destructive forehand to take it to a tiebreak. Chung is not only the first Korean man or woman to make a Slam quarterfinal, he'll try to become just the third Asian player in a Slam final, after Li Na and Kei Nishikori.

Clutching at his upper leg and hip area, Nadal bravely battled on in the fourth but lost the set 6-2.
