Facebook's brilliant news feed revamp

The shares tumbled the most in more than a year.

He said in a press statement how the flood of news articles and marketing has created an imbalance that "is crowding out the personal moments that lead us to connect more with each other". While this will make for a more enjoyable social experience on Facebook, one of the drawbacks of this change is that numerous businesses, brands or media that users want to follow will not be visible as often. That suggests investors take Facebook seriously when it says the move will likely make users spend less time on its service. The persistent attack has forced these publishers and brands to ask an even more important question: why does Facebook hate businesses so much?

"My colleagues and I at Facebook understand that this has been a pain point for many businesses, and we're committed to helping you understand what's driving this change so your business can succeed on Facebook". They were trading down 4.1 percent at 9:45 a.m.in NY.

Facebook obviously believes most of its users enjoy keeping up with what's happening in their social circles, even if the material being shared mostly revolves around parties, vacations and other fun times while omitting life's inevitable challenges and tedium. However, there's another potential problem: The change could exacerbate Facebook's problem with fake news.

"This is recognition of the issues they've faced with toxic content", said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research Group. But businesses that use Facebook to connect with their customers without paying for ads will also feel the pain.

The other aspect of Facebook changes is that it will be harder for companies and public relations professionals to get News Feed attention. Although that may have worked in the past, this is not what Facebook considers a "meaningful social interaction".

In other words, there were consequences to Facebook's decision to introduce itself as a primary news source, only to abandon that role. But as the fallout in Slovakia and Cambodia illustrated, any changes to Facebook's algorithms are likely to have unintended consequences.

When you log into Facebook, click the down arrow in the far top right corner.

While the changes could hurt Facebook's business in the short term, happier users could make for better profits over the long term. To make matters worse, Facebook admitted that 10 million users saw ads purchased by Kremlin-linked accounts.

Even if this move does eventually end up slowing down the fake news problem, there still remains the fact that publishers, brands, and the like will still be able to pay to have their content placed in a more prominent position on the News Feed. The feed allowed new media start-ups like Mashable and Buzzfeed to soar and established players like The Guardian to find new audiences.

Facebook's founder, Mark Zuckerberg, announced that the company will overhaul the algorithm for the platform's news feed. With the latest change, Facebook's algorithm will prioritize posts that spark back-and-forth discussion or inspire people to share and react. Now it wants to promote posts that encourage interactions with people closest to the users and dropping in rank those that only bring in superficial likes and shares. Mosseri noted that communities are also becoming increasingly more active and vibrant on the social media platform. Downplaying those posts from brands and businesses may put revenue at risk, said James Cakmak, an analyst at Monness Crespi Hardt & Co.

In the interview, which NBC News appears to be drawing out and airing on different shows, the men talk a lot about what Facebook can do in to avoid foreign interference in future elections, but Parakilas and McNamee also say they tried to warn the company before the 2016 election.
