Roger Federer has won his 6th Australian Open title and 20th Grand Slam after beating Marin Cilic in Melbourne on Sunday night.

The Swiss defending champion dropped his only sets of the tournament before completing a 6-2, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win over the sixth seeded Croatian in 3hr 3min.

In addition to his six Australian Open titles, Federer's Grand Slam résumé includes eight Wimbledon titles, five U.S. Open championships and one French Open title. His earlier opponents included six-time Australian Open victor Novak Djokovic and world No. 4 Alexander Zverev.

'I never thought I was going to play a bit of a lesser schedule, which is quite enjoyable.

"I think I played great tournament so far with my level of tennis", the 29-year-old, bidding to become the first Croatian with multiple grand slam titles, said. It had been the first time that Federer had failed to make the final since losing the 2005 Australian Open semis to Marat Safin.

Cilic was hampered by blisters when he lost to Federer in last year's Wimbledon final, but he has made a relatively pain-free run through the other half of the draw, including a quarterfinal win over an injured Nadal.

"I'm so happy, it's unbelievable", Federer added.

The blockbustre semi-final against Hyeon Chung, on Australia Day no less, hadn't gone to plan.

Bashing winners for fun he repeated the trick twice to grab the opening set in 33 minutes.

"It's been an fantastic two weeks".

"A lot of experts. said I was going to be world No. 1, win everything". Chung is a student of Djokovician tennis, who - as the New York Times reported - played childhood matches against his brother who impersonated Nadal and now finally got a first taste of Federer.

The Californian resident will again be in the stands when Federer attempts to chalk up major No.20, and says he has seen Federer evolve as a player over the journey.

Federer will also be bidding to win three slams in 12 months for the first time since his mid-20s romp in 2008/09.

Federer took a rare bathroom break yet it did little to stop Cilic's surge. His achievements have been put into context by the recent injuries to Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, however the Swiss doesn't appear to have any fitness issues ahead of the final. "Found some things that can improve my game, some small details in the game that I focused on".

Chung won one more game but after Federer held for 5-2 he walked to the net to offer his hand, departing the arena to sympathetic applause and a smattering of boos.

"I want to thank my team. I'm happy I'm still around, still healthy, still playing good, giving myself chances, playing the best".

Federer is an odds-on favourite to claim a remarkable 20th grand slam crown.

The fourth set for Cilic started in the same as the first with an immediate break of his serve. Cilic's serve then got him out of trouble in the 5th game when Federer had a break point.

It was only the fifth time Federer had been broken all tournament and the giant Croat broke through again in the eighth game before successfully serving it out to keep the match alive and set an unlikely deciding set shoot-out. "I mean, I've won all my matches without dropping a set".
