Government shut down fails to make DACA more than just a dream

DC Shutdown: Wielding the “Nuclear Option”

DC Shutdown: Wielding the “Nuclear Option”

Gardner, a Republican, and Bennet, a Democrat, have been backing a bipartisan plan that offered the White House $2.7 billion for the border wall and ramped-up security; barring Dreamers from sponsoring their parents, eliminating more than 50,000 visas awarded by lottery and letting the Dreamers obtain citizenship within 10 years. Especially for the Dreamers who are enrolled in or who have completed higher education, creating highly educated and trained workers to better our nation as a whole. The Democrats have rolled over and submitted to their demands by reopening the government.

Trump's suggested limitations on family sponsorships echo the recommendations of earlier blue-ribbon commissions and aren't as harsh as they would have been before travel and telecommunications became more affordable.

Every year, the U.S. admits more than 1.5 foreign nationals, with the vast majority deriving from family-based chain migration, whereby newly naturalized citizens can bring an unlimited number of foreign relatives to the U.S. In 2016, the legal and illegal immigrant population reached a record high 44 million.

Since President Trump ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in September, the futures of roughly 800,000 DACA beneficiaries have been in limbo. It was Senator Harry Reid, the Democratic leader at the time, who first used the so-called nuclear option to end filibusters for administration nominees and most judicial ones.

After three days, our Democrat colleagues agreed to end the shutdown and pass a Continuing Resolution through February 8, 2018, citing assurances from Senate Majority Leader McConnell that we would consider DACA legislation, something we had all agreed we must take up in the near future anyway.

The last two efforts to reform America's tangled immigration policies in 2007 and 2013 were still based on a faith across party lines that foreigners coming legally to these shores were good for America. The federal apparatus is operating on a stopgap, with more short-term measures likely to come.

This shutdown was caused due to "a bitter spending-and-immigration impasse" (USA Today). Just 13 percent said the middle class will benefit the most, the poll showed. "It also depresses the wage levels".

But the proposed legal immigration changes have made the plan a virtual nonstarter with the other side of the aisle.

But don't let these facts get in the way of black and white Democrats wanting to play the race card and exploit the immigration issue.

One such member, Sen.

The president's comments followed a deadly vehicle bombing attack in Kabul, the Afghan capital, that killed at least 95 people and wounded 158 more.

During the presidential primaries Donald Trump told Chuck Todd that his immigration plan will be "Hard-line, comprehensive..." and will "stop the problem". President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, who is also head of the 55 country African Union, called him a friend and thanked him "for the support we have received from you, personal, and your administration".

DETROW: Thanks for having me. It's a pretty exhaustive list detailing what Clark thought of his boss at the time, but what Clark said sums up how I feel about Trump's new "Jelly of the Month Club" amnesty plan. We believe it has value in spreading the promise of the American dream throughout the globe, even if that does mean it helps people from countries the president recently dismissed with a term that was simultaneously vulgar and racist.

In 2009, though, he was unequivocal about illegal immigration.
