Government To Shut Down After Band-Aid Funding Falls Off

US shutdown: White House voicemail changed to blame Democrats

Republicans counter that Democrats rejected a bill that has nothing objectionable in it, but does not include the opposition party's priorities on the unrelated issue of immigration.

- Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 20, 2018This is the One Year Anniversary of my Presidency and the Democrats wanted to give me a nice present.

Trump immediately moved to blame Democrats.

"It is like a two-year-old temper tantrum to say, 'I will take my toys and go home because I am upset about something else, '" he said.

The White House has already stated it will not negotiate on immigration until Democrats reopen the government, and Ryan also criticized the Democrats' position.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, in a statement released immediately after the Senate failed to act on a short-term spending bill late Friday, cast Democrats as "obstructionist losers".

The government shut down Friday night, and many are looking for someone to blame. "[Trump] wasn't going to get in the middle of it", Cornyn said. The stop-gap funding measure that would have kept the government running through February 16 passed through the House on Thursday with largely Republican support.

Just 50 votes were secured in the end, with five Republicans voting against the bill while five Democrats voted for it.

The Democrats have demanded protection from deportation of more than 700,000 undocumented immigrants who entered the United States as children. But Republicans argue that negotiations are ongoing.

Mr McConnell and Mr Schumer insisted they were still committed to finding an agreement that restores government funding as soon as possible.

So in a last ditch effort to keep the government and his vacation from grinding to a halt, Trump tried on Friday to strike a deal on his own with Chuck Schumer, the ranking Democrat in the Senate.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump was not willing to deal.

But essential services will still run. Members of the military will report for duty, but troops could potentially not be paid during the shutdown.

Rep. Seth Moulton called for a "new generation of leaders" following the shutdown and remarked on the timing of the funding failure with the one-year anniversary of Trump taking office.

The rejection of the funding bill by the Senate meant many government services would close down until the budget was agreed upon.

They were given temporary legal status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program started by former President Barack Obama.
