Nervous Republicans fear they'll pay if government shuts down

DACA Renewal Applications Resume After Judge's Ruling

Cory Booker (D., N.J.), Kamala Harris (D., Calif.), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.)-are taking hardline stances on a spending deal, insisting on voting down any government-funding bill that does not protect so-called "Dreamers", immigrants brought to the US illegally as children, from deportation. And congressional Democrats would be foolish if they refuse to give a little to get a deal done.Business and agriculture organizations in Iowa and IL have, for years, pined for sweeping changes to the American immigration system.

"For people to hold up money for our military for these unrelated issues - and for deadlines that don't even exist this Friday - that makes no sense", Ryan told reporters.

The Senate majority leader intends to keep the chamber in session through the weekend and stage a series of votes created to put Democrats from conservative states on defense, according to two Republican sources familiar with his plans and an email sent by McConnell on Thursday and obtained by POLITICO.

Sen. Doug Jones, a Democrat who last month narrowly won an upset victory in a special election in solidly conservative Alabama, dodged questions about how his constituents would respond to a government shutdown over Dreamers.

"I'm looking for something that President Trump supports, and he's not yet indicated what measure he's willing to sign", he said. By this she meant legislation that would maintain President Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program without funding a border wall or making any other concessions to immigration hard liners.

Trump ordered DACA to end in March and asked Congress to come up with a legislative fix.

Mr. Cornyn said neither Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Kentucky Republican, nor House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, would put the Gang of Six deal on the floor for votes.

Those talks have been led by the second-ranking Republicans and Democrats in the House and the Senate. The President doubled down and said no more risky lottery.

The proposal, negotiated by key Republican and Democratic lawmakers since late past year, would address the plight of hundreds of thousands of young undocumented immigrants brought to America as children.

The bill would offer a pathway to citizenship for eligible young undocumented immigrants who came to the USA as children, allocate almost $3 billion to a border wall and technology, limit sponsorship of family members by recipients of the program and reallocate diversity lottery visas to other immigration programs.

Also complicating matters on DACA has been the war of words from both parties on what exactly the President said during an immigration meeting last week, in which he reportedly made clear he did not favor more immigration from African nations and the island of Haiti.

Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., defended the agreement as a "principled compromise" on NBC's "Meet the Press" and said, "I hope people will explore it". He said an "overwhelming number" of Democratic senators do not support it.

"So Democrats are now threatening to shut down the government if they don't get amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants".

McConnell's prime targets in his goal to increase his majority are the 10 Democrats from states that voted for President Donald Trump in 2016.

"To my Republican friends, I say: We're not going to get the sun, moon and the stars". Nielsen was also in the meeting but said she didn't recall that specific phrase being used.

"I'll vote to keep the government open", West Virginia Sen.

The last government shutdown, which took place over the course of 16 days, cost the U.S.an estimated $24 billion, according to Standard & Poor's.

Graham said there's enough will to solve both problems now, arguing there's no need to kick the can down the road. Then he threw sand, a wrench, an entire toolbox into the gears of his party's efforts to pass a temporary spending bill to keep the government open past Friday night. Senate Democrats would be wise to take seriously bills, such as this, as the alternatives in the House are intended exclusively to scuttle the entire endeavor.

Trump wrote on Twitter that if the government were shut down over amnesty and border security, the military would be the biggest loser. Trump has responded that the media accounts are inaccurate and on Tuesday the president said he wanted immigrants to come to America from everywhere.

The White House quickly sought to clarify Trump's message.
