Australian Open: Roger Federer defeats Marton Fucsovics to reach quarter-finals

A fired up Roger Federer booked his 14th semi-final berth at Melbourne Park with a dominant 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 6-4 victory over old foe Tomas Berdych.

In the semi-final on Friday, Federer will meet the unseeded South Korean Hyeon Chung, who earlier beat American Tennys Sandgren 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-3 to make South Korea's first ever Grand Slam semi-final.

In the nightcap, defending champion Roger Federer will take on Tomas Berdych in a quarter-final rematch of last year's third round contest, which the Swiss maestro won in straight sets.

Federer said of his 20th win over Berdych in 26 meetings: "I was very happy to get out of the first set, I think it ended up being the key to the match".

"I saw his matches, he's been hitting the big shots".

The world number two defeated the Czech 19th seed 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 6-4 in the Rod Laver Arena night session. The Swiss then turned on the style in the tie-break, allowing Berdych a solitary point, and then wrapped up the second set with a single break of serve.

He never looked back, going on to win Wednesday's quarter-final 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 6-4 in just two hours and 14 minutes, and later admitted that his confrontation with Murphy was largely a bid to fire himself up.

'I think I'm not exhausted because I win. Then, you know, I think he just get more confident after he saved the first set.

Federer's said Nadal's retirement in the fifth set against Marin Cilic the previous evening, scuppering a repeat of last year's epic final, had played on his mind.

Despite playing poorly, Federer got away with the first set. For the first time since the opening set, the Czech applied some pressure and was able to immediately break back, though another sloppy service game cost as Federer broke again, and this time consolidated to go just two games from victory.

"I thought he played very well".

"I had a good chances, a couple of set points", Berdych said.

"I like it when we don't know the guys".

This match nearly feels like a step down though, even if the form of the Hungarian has been good and the only question surrounding Federer is whether he will still be as dominant in the later rounds when he begins to take on higher ranked player.

The clock is undoubtedly ticking on Federer's career, with some people even surprised he's still playing to the level he is now, but he turns 37 later this year, and doesn't have too long left to add to his record total of slams.

"The goal for me was really trying to be focused on my own game and take it to him and play tough".

In the other semifinal, No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki will play 22-year-old Elise Mertens.

Top-seeded Simona Halep, who had to rally from triple match point down to advance through the third round, beat Naomi Osaka 6-3, 6-2.
