Shutdown over: Trump signs continuing resolution to reopen federal government

What Trump was saying during the last government shutdown

The House of Representatives on Monday evening voted to end a three-day government shutdown following passage of a short-term spending bill.

The government shut down on Friday when the chamber failed to cast the necessary 60 votes to pass a stop-gap bill to fund the government through February 16.

"We will vote today to reopen the government, to continue negotiating a global agreement with the commitment that if an agreement isn't reached by February 8, the Senate will immediately proceed to consideration of legislation dealing with DACA". They had been protected from deportation under an Obama-era program known as DACA, which Trumps wants to end.

CNN reported that Democrats also rejected a Republican proposal because it didn't have firm commitments from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to take up those key issues in regular order if they voted to pass a spending bill. House Republicans, meanwhile, said they are not bound by promises made in the Senate.

President Trump was expected to be celebrating the anniversary of his inauguration at his Mar-A-Lago resort, but instead made a decision to stay in the White House until a deal was met.

Mr McConnell's comments followed hours of behind-the-scenes talks between the leaders and rank-and-file lawmakers over how to end the display of legislative dysfunction, which began at midnight Friday after Democrats blocked a temporary spending measure.

The answer - I think - is that red-state Democrats up for re-election in 2018 panicked.

"After several discussions, offers, counteroffers, the Republican leader and I have come to an arrangement", said Schumer.

The Republicans now have 51 senators and would need some Democratic support to pass a budget.

The last government shutdown, in October 2013, lasted for 16 days and about 850,000 federal employees were furloughed.

"The wall offer is off the table", Schumer told reporters on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON ― Democrats provided votes to fund the government on Monday in exchange for an assurance from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that he would put an immigration bill on the floor in the coming weeks.

The Senate's Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, is taking back his offer to President Trump to fund his "big attractive wall".

"They don't want to do it but are powerless", he tweeted, referring to Schumer and other Democratic leaders. "As to Steven Miller there's only one person here makes decisions about immigration but anything and that's the president so you know there's a reason I don't go on Morning Joe anymore cause doesn't really try to tell folks was actually going on".

MoveOn.org, one of the most influential progressive organizations in Washington, similarly panned the agreement that 33 Senate Democrats voted to advance to a final vote on Monday. "The great deal-making President sat on the sidelines", Schumer said.

Bill Kristol, editor-at-large of The Weekly Standard, complained about President Donald Trump's behavior during the government shutdown and called it too "partisan" and "personal" for his taste, on MSNBC's "Velshi And Ruhle" on Monday.

The White House endorsed that bill, and it appeared to be gaining traction among conservatives.

"We will not negotiate the status of unlawful immigrants while Democrats hold our lawful citizens hostage over their reckless demands", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement after the vote.
