Turkey warns United States over Kurdish militia group

Akar said Turkey respects Syria's territorial integrity and would remain committed to the negotiations between Iran and Russian Federation regarding Syria.

The U.N. Security Council was to convene later Monday to discuss the situation in Syria.

Turkey, has meanwhile, ignored Washington's call to limit the time and scope of the military operation in Afrin, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan pointing to its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally's decades-long military presence in other countries.

A spokesman for the Kurdish fighters said the attack was repelled.

Turkey's air and ground offensive, now into its fourth day, is targeting US -backed Kurdish YPG fighters in Afrin, near the Turkish border.

Turkey considers the YPG to be a terrorist group.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson added on Monday that the US recognizes Turkey's right to protect its citizens from terrorist attacks launched from Syria.

Ankara's offensive against Kurdish forces in northwestern Syria appears to be driving a wedge between opposition Kurdish parties and their traditional allies within the Turkey-based Syrian National Coalition.

"They (Turkish authorities) warned us before they launched the aircraft they were going to do it", said Mattis en route to Indonesia and Vietnam.

A Turkish operation there could have an impact on USA operations further east in Syria, the officials said.

The YPG control a large part of northern Syria - some 24% of all Syrian territory, including hundreds of kilometers along the Turkish border.

The YPG are believed to have an estimate 10,000 fighters in and around Afrin.

The operation also includes air strikes on the district, threatening to create another humanitarian disaster in the region.

More than a million people are believed to live in the enclave - many of them refugees from the Syrian civil war.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said troops crossed into the YPG-controlled region in Syria at 0805 GMT, the Dogan news agency reported.

The suspects are being held in a nationwide crackdown on those posting social media messages deemed to be supportive of terror groups, the state-run Anadolu news agency said.

Ankara sees the YPG as an extension of a separatist Kurdish group within its own borders which has waged a decades-long insurgency against the Turkish state. "There won't be a step back from Afrin", he said.

Earlier Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to "sort out" Afrin. The town has since emerged as a model for US-backed Kurdish rule of largely Arab areas.

The operation could also spread along the Turkish-Syrian border.

There is growing worldwide concern that the Turkish offensive could ignite yet another humanitarian crisis in Syria. They control almost 25 percent of Syrian territory dubbed Rojava that includes the three "cantons" of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira.

Aybet said "Turkey has worked very efficiently to clear a very large area from Daesh as well".

According to Iranian media, Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of staff of Iran's armed forces, spoke to his Turkish counterpart, Hulusi Akar, about the January 21 operations. Both the Obama and Trump administrations have provided the group with training and weapons as the chief U.S. ally against ISIS in Syria.

Le Drian said he told his Turkish counterpart that this offensive "worries us" and said he calls on Turkey "to show the greatest restraint".

It is blacklisted as a terror group by Ankara and its Western allies. Another commander said hundreds more were stationed in Atmeh, south of Afrin.
