It prompted condemnations from the Syrian government, Iran and Egypt. "This fighting must stop", French Defense Minister Florence Parly said on French television Sunday. The backbone of the multi-ethnic Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which is considered by Turkey to be part and parcel of Turkey's separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Many of us are descendants of the survivors of genocides that were committed by Turkish states against the non-Turkish peoples during and after World War I. All of these communities have refused to leave Afrin despite the threat from the Islamic government in Turkey and the jihadist groups associated with it that publicly threaten us with ethnic cleansing.

The YPG also forms the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the main U.S. ally against the Islamic State group in Syria.

The Kurdish-led SDF are a key part of the USA -led coalition's fight against Daesh (IS) in Syria and are now taking part in a training program for a border security force in the country's north.

The U.S. has urged Turkey to exercise restraint and ensure that its military offensive into Afrin is limited in scope and duration.

"Operation Olive Branch is ongoing as planned and the ground operation has started", the Turkish military stated.

Furthermore, the opportunity for what Lavrov has called "a constructive dialogue" with the USA has also been sacrificed on the altar of President Erdogan's ambition.

The operation also includes air strikes on the district, threatening to create another humanitarian disaster in the region. Any more meddling will only make it more hard than ever to reach a peace agreement that could finally bring an end to Syria's ruinous civil war.

Washington said it's open to helping Ankara create secure zones, and to addressing "legitimate" concerns in the region.

The KNC's sharp criticism of Turkey's attack on PYD-affiliated forces in Afrin comes despite long-standing tensions between the two Kurdish groups.

Turkish soldiers stand on top of tanks in a village on the Turkish-Syrian border in Gaziantep province, Turkey.

The PKK has its main headquarters in northern Iraq but recently intensified its presence along the Iraqi-Syria border in order to strengthen YPG positions in northern Syria.

Lavrov also addressed the US role in northern Syria where, RT reports, he said that USA forces were "seriously involved in creating alternative government bodies on a vast part of the Syrian territory".

Mr Bali said the SDF sent reinforcements to Afrin.

Agnieszka Brugger, a Greens lawmaker, said the Turkish military operation demonstrated the devastating impact that German weapons sales could have overseas.

Following meetings with Russia, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would not back down from the original plan to oust Kurdish fighters from Afrin. The town has since emerged as a model for US-backed Kurdish rule of largely Arab areas.

Turkey is a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and has occasionally talked about invoking Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation charter to demand assistance from other member states when it comes under attack from factions in the Syrian civil war.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation also said it has no presence in Syria but that as members of the coalition against Islamic State militants, "our focus is on the defeat" of the extremist group. Turkey's General Staff however insists these people were "terrorists.".

Ankara's offensive against Kurdish forces in northwestern Syria appears to be driving a wedge between opposition Kurdish parties and their traditional allies within the Turkey-based Syrian National Coalition.
