US President Donald Trump seeks 'constitutional option' to end government shutdown

Trump and Schumer meet in the White House as shutdown looms

Sunday morning on Twitter, he called on the GOP-controlled Senate to consider deploying the "nuclear option" - changing Senate rules to end the filibuster - and reopen the government with a simple majority.

Earlier, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), blamed Republicans and Trump for the stalemate, saying the White House twice rescinded an agreement that Democrats had agreed to on Friday regarding immigration reform.

Paul called on Republican leadership in both chambers of Congress to commit to a week of debate and a vote on immigration legislation in the next month, to win over Democratic votes to reopen the government.

White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said Sunday the current government shutdown was different than the one that occurred in 2013 because then-President Barack Obama wanted a closure to hurt Republicans.

"This is ridiculous, open the government back up and then we'll get back to negotiations", Ryan said on CBS.

"The American people can not begin to understand why the Senate Democratic leader thinks the entire government should be shut down until he gets his way on illegal immigration", McConnell said.

What Trump failed to mention is that there were four Republicans who voted against the measure on Friday and five Democrats who voted for it. Senate Majority Leader McConnell and Democratic leader Chuck Schumer met off the Senate floor in the early evening, as many in quiet Capitol offices flipped their television screens to playoff football games.

"He is going to bring up a bill keeping funded to February 8, and we've agreed that we're going to accept that in the House".

"We will not negotiate the status of unlawful immigrants while Democrats hold our lawful citizens hostage over their reckless demands", the statement said after the funding legislation failed to get the 60 votes needed to overcome a procedural hurdle. But John Cornyn, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, told reporters when asked if he thought the government would remain shuttered on Monday: "Right now, yeah".

He continued to blame the Democrats for the shutdown.

Senate Democrat Dick Durbin expressed optimism that despite intense recent feuding, both sides could quickly strike a deal to end the shutdown. On Saturday, White House aides said they would not negotiate on immigration until the government re-opened. That's why this compromise will be called a Trump Shutdown. "That's what we need to do, kick these guys in the tail and get them to work".

"It all really stems from the president, whose inability to clinch a deal has created the Trump shutdown", Schumer said.

"This is another example of President Trump growing a tweet in the middle of bipartisan negotiations that are making progress", Democratic Senator Chris Coons told the TV channel.

President Trump accused the Democrats of putting politics above the interests of the American people.

Mr Trump accused Democrats of prioritising illegal immigrants over U.S. citizens, but while the "Dreamers" may have been brought to America as children, they have lived there most of their lives.

Another sign took aim at Trump's government: "I've seen smarter cabinets at IKEA", it said, referring to a furniture store with items requiring often-tedious and time-consuming assembly.

The last U.S. shutdown happened in 2013 and lasted for 16 days, during which many federal employees took a forced leave of absence.

The shutdown began on the first anniversary of President Trump's inauguration. "Our democracy was created to run on compromise, the Senate was created to run on compromise".

"The Dems (Democrats) just want illegal immigrants to pour into our nation unchecked".

It's unclear whether there is enough bipartisan support for the immigration proposal being offered by Flake and Graham - or for one that Senate conservatives are also drafting.
