"I'm looking forward to it, actually", Mr. Trump said late on Wednesday when asked by reporters at the White House.

But for all their eagerness to cooperate with the Mueller investigation, Trump and his lawyers will also have to be careful of certain mistakes people have made in the past in special counsel interviews.

The Times doesn't peg Trump's attempt to fire Mueller to a specific date in June, so it's impossible to know whether Ruddy spoke to Woodruff before, after or just as Trump gave McGahn the order. If Cobb is correct that the Mueller investigation will end well for a cooperative Trump, this is all a laudable example of excellent client management.

Since then, Trump and his allies have repeatedly denied that the President had ever considered firing Mueller, who is tasked with investigating Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections and any possible collusion with Trump's campaign. It was reported that Mueller's investigation was in talks with the White House about interviewing Trump, and he said he would prefer to do it soon.

The number of voluntary interviews included eight people from the White House counsel's office.

"Mr. McGahn also told White House officials that Mr. Trump would not follow through on the dismissal on his own", reads the Times report.

Trump's lawyer isn't the brightest bulb in the box either, as he was tricked by a prankster posing as Trump's social media director, and earnestly responded to e-mails sent from dan.scavinojr@emailprankster.co.uk (as did Jared Kushner's lawyers and others around the White House).

Dowd called it "the most transparent response in history by a president" to a special counsel.

While Trump has repeatedly hinted at his frustration with the special counsel investigation, arguing there is zero evidence of collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation, he has stopped short of publicly calling for his firing.

Ms Feinstein angered Mr Grassley this month by releasing the transcript of the panel's interview with Glenn Simpson, a co-founder of Fusion GPS - the private research firm behind the infamous dossier alleging Mr Trump's ties to Russian Federation. After Trump's comments last night, his attorney Ty Cobb hastened to add that Trump wasn't giving his unilateral assent to meet Mueller under any conditions. At an impromptu press conference on Wednesday, Trump said he was "looking forward" to speaking to Mueller's team.

In one meeting with other advisers, Bannon raised the concern that if Trump fired Mueller it could trigger a challenge to his presidency based on the 25th Amendment, which lays out the process of who succeeds a president in case of incapacitation.

The White House has been cooperating with Mueller's investigation.

Since then, Trump brought in a new legal team that has counseled cooperation with Mueller. The president's 2016 campaign has turned over more than 1.4 million pages.

Mueller was Federal Bureau of Investigation director at the time of the disagreement.

Law professor Steven G. Calabresi, a co-founder of the conservative Federalist Society, said in an interview that he "strongly opposed the special prosecutor law both" as it has recently been used against Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush in the Iran-Contra affair, in addition to how it was used by Kenneth W. Starr against President Clinton.
